Special Education and Section 504

Select a title below to expand menu.

Austin ISD is committed to providing quality services for all students. Special education refers to instruction that is specially designed to meet each student's needs throughout the school day. All students are general education students first, and the provision of special education and related services, or Section 504 accommodations and supplementary aids and services, are provided in addition to general education—not in place of it.

The Special Education team ensures children who receive special education services are provided with access to a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment. We are committed to ensuring students with disabilities receive maximum access to the general education curriculum through a continuum of services and the use of inclusive evidence-based practices.

Inclusive education means creating an educational environment where all students have the opportunity to participate and learn. The Department of Special Education and members of the Austin ISD Inclusion Workgroup developed a set of principles that guides our implementation of inclusive practices.

The principles align with special education law that requires school districts to include all students to the maximum opportunity appropriate to learn with children who do not have disabilities—in academic, nonacademic, and extracurricular activities. This part of IDEA is called Least Restrictive Environment or LRE.

On August 22, 2024 the Strategic Plan for Special Education Services was finalized. Review the document here (EnglishSpanish).

Fine Arts

Fine Arts at Austin ISD

The Austin ISD Fine Arts Department believes that a Fine Arts education is essential for the development of the whole child. The arts provide students with unique experiences that allow them to explore their passions, maximize creativity and critical thinking, and learn valuable lessons about self-motivation, dedication, teamwork, and communication.

Fine Arts: Tools for Success

AISD is a recognized leader in urban education and is dedicated to providing an arts-rich education for every student. As of 2024–25 years, the district served approximately 72,702 students across the district’s schools. (Austin ISD Demographics)

Fine Arts education is available across district schools. Every elementary student in the district receives a high-quality education in:

  • Music
  • Visual Arts

Secondary schools throughout AISD offer many different Fine Arts strands for students to pursue:

  • Band
  • Choir
  • Dance
  • Guitar
  • Orchestra
  • Theatre
  • Visual Arts

Each of these sequential courses — all featuring a meaningful and rigorous curriculum taught by expert staff — equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary for cognitive, creative, emotional, and social growth.

By enrolling in these Fine Arts courses, students are also eligible to participate in clinics and contests such as All-City Guitar, All-City Band, All-City Choir, competitions like UIL Concert & Sight Reading, One-Act Play, Dance Spectacular, and Visual Art Scholastic Event, as well as various concerts, community events, and arts exhibits.

Fine Arts students from AISD have won numerous district, state, and national awards and scholarships. Many go on to pursue the arts in higher education and beyond.

Physical Education & Health

Welcome to the Physical Education & Health Department

The Austin ISD Physical Education and Health Department inspires students to make healthy decisions, develop social skills and pursue lifelong physical fitness.

To support the development of the whole child, all AISD campuses participate in the Coordinated School Health initiative. CSH advances student academic performance by helping students  establish healthy behaviors designed to last their lifetime.

Please be advised that an age-appropriate human sexuality and responsibility unit focusing on health, safety and well-being is also taught to Austin ISD K-12 students. HSR lessons are taught to those students in grades K-12 whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) have provided written permission by way of the opt-in or permission letter. This letter is sent home by the student’s campus leadership or classroom teacher three weeks prior to the beginning of the HSR unit. Implementation is slated to take place annually in November/December, with students enrolled in the spring semester of high school health receiving it in April/May. Please visit the human sexuality and responsibility webpage for more information.

Physical activity limitation information

Some students may be exempt from all or some physical activities based on their individual needs. To be exempt from any physical activities, including the Fitnessgram assessment, a student must submit the restricted physical activity student report (Spanish) or submit other formal documentation completed by a member of the healing arts licensed to practice in Texas. Students will be required to learn the physical education TEKS through accommodations and/or modifications.

Library Media Services

Welcome to AISD's Library Media Services Department

Sharing resources to affirm, inform, and empower!

Mission

The mission of Austin ISD libraries is to nurture a life-long appreciation of reading and learning by assuring that students have opportunities for successful access, evaluation and use of information, technology, and literature.

Beliefs

Austin ISD librarians believe:

  • collaboration between the library and school community promotes student achievement
  • open and equitable access to library services and resources is essential
  • school libraries and librarians positively impact literacy and life-long learning

Goals

Austin ISD libraries will provide up-to-date, relevant, and appropriate resources which facilitate and extend learning and meet students' individual reading needs.

Austin ISD library staff will model and encourage life-long learning and literacy as a source of pleasure and power.

Austin ISD library staff will work with the school community to promote student achievement.

Library Collections

Austin ISD campus library collections contain almost two million books!  Search for books at your child's library, or any library in the district, using our online catalog.

Materials for library collections are selected by certified school librarians and professional library staff at each campus to meet the specific needs of their students and community. These choices are guided by the criteria and standards established by policy EFB(LOCAL) Instructional Resources: Library Materials, approved by the Board of Trustees on August 21, 2025.

Parental Involvement

Austin ISD libraries recognize parents and guardians as the primary decision-makers regarding their own child(ren)'s access to library materials, and strongly encourage families to talk together about what students are reading and their reading choices. Talking about books together is a great way to engage with students about what they are learning, thinking, and feeling, and also provides an opportunity for parents to model that they value reading and literacy. Parents/guardians who wish to obtain a record of what library materials their student has checked out may do so by sending an email to the campus Librarian, Associate of Library Services, or other staff member designated by the principal from an email account that is associated with that student. Parents who wish to limit their student's access to specific books in that student's campus library collection may do so by submitting an AISD Help ticket for each book title; this ticket is located under Teaching, Learning, Leading & Community Requests > Student & School Experience > Restricted Access to Library Materials. Parents are also welcome to volunteer in their child's library and to recommend books to be considered for the collection; please contact the campus librarian for more information.

Secondary Student Information

High School Success at Austin ISD

Success in middle and high school requires planning and lots of hard work. Students should choose their courses carefully, plan to work hard and become involved in extracurricular activities.

AISD offers students support throughout their high school careers, and has created the Secondary Course Selection Guide to help students and their families on the path to graduation success. The SCSG contains important information on how students can be successful in middle and high school. The guide highlights Austin ISD policies, rules and regulations that apply to secondary school students. It also provides detailed information about courses available at each level.

Rank in Class

The purpose of the district’s class rank policy is to promote rigorous academic standards and readiness for college, career, and life in a globally competitive economy. Class ranking shall be used to determine district honors and awards and will be submitted to colleges. Class rank shall be determined by descending order of students’ weighted GPAs earned in courses that satisfy the students’ graduation plans in the following curriculum categories: • English/Language Arts; • Mathematics; • Science; • Social Studies; • Languages Other than English (LOTE up to two credits).

Understanding Your Student's Class Rank

GPA Calculation Definitions:Austin ISD uses a weighted 4.0 scale. Honors-level courses are given a higher grade point value.

Cumulative GPA (Weighted 4.0 Scale)

  • Includes all high school courses taken for high school credit (cumulative).
  • Honors level courses receive higher grade point value.
  • Reported on student’s high school transcript.
  • Reported on student’s report card.
  • Called Weighted GPA in Naviance.

Unweighted GPA (4.0 Scale)

  • Includes all high school courses taken for high school credit (cumulative).
  • Honors level courses do not receive higher grade point value.
  • Not reported on student’s high school transcript or report card.
  • Called Cumulative GPA in Naviance.

Rank GPA (Weighted 4.0 Scale)

  • Includes high school courses in the four course areas and foreign language that meet graduation requirements. See details below.
  • Honors level courses receive higher grade point value.
  • Ranked GPA is used in Top 10% Calculation.
  • Reported on student’s report card (except for non-ranking high schools).
  • Not listed in Naviance.

Class rank is a snapshot of a fluid process of adding to and updating the high school transcript. Semester averages may change as teachers’ gradebooks are updated, dual credits are added, and outside credits are completed. Even though transcripts are updated throughout the semester, once class rank is set for the semester, it remains unchanged until the next ranking period. AISD calculates class rank for students beginning the spring of their 10th grade year. Thereafter, students are ranked after the end of each semester. Current semester data is never used to calculate rank.

For more information regarding GPA policy, Class Rank, Regulation, and Exceptions, please refer to the Board Policy Manual.

Admission and Placement of New Students

Families and students are responsible for ensuring that the enrolling campus received the high school educational records for a student who is registering. Courses will be evaluated for transfer of credit.  Award of credit is based on alignment with Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills.

A student entering the district from non-accredited public, private or parochial school, including home schools, shall be placed initially at the discretion of the principal, pending assessment appropriate to the student’s grade level, validation of credits, or results of credit-by-examination tests [FD (LOCAL)]. The student or the student's shall request credit validation at the time of registration. Please check with your campus registrar for more information.
