How much time will I have to address the board?

General Public Comment: One minute

Public Testimony: The time allowed each speaker during Public Testimony will depend on the number of people who have signed up to speak for each agenda item. It is the board’s desire to allow up to 1 minute per speaker. However, if the number of speakers is so large that it affects the ability of the board to do the work scheduled, the presiding officer has discretion to set a shorter time period.

Both types: Both types: The allotted time will be doubled if interpretation services are required for either type. When the allotted time is reached, the microphone will be turned off. Should you wish to offer additional remarks not bound by time limits, please write them down and give them to the Community Engagement Coordinator at the meeting or place them in the comment box located near the room’s entrance/exit.

When will I be called to speak?

General Public Comment: General Public Comment will be scheduled at the beginning of each regular voting meeting. Speakers will be called in the order received through the call-in and in-person sign up.

Public Testimony: Please look for agenda item “Public Testimony” for the meeting at which you plan to speak. The presiding officer has discretion over the order in which items are called.

What if I would like to speak on a topic that is not on the agenda?

You may speak on topics that are not listed on the meeting’s agenda during the General Public Comment agenda item at the beginning of the Regular Voting Meeting. Though not required by law, the board will allow up to 10 people to speak on general items not up for consideration. The first 10 people to sign up will be guaranteed to speak, and a waiting list of five people will be taken in case a speaker does not show. To ensure equity of access, individuals may sign up to speak at the General Public Comment portion of a meeting once every three regular voting meetings.

How else can I submit my comments to the board?

  • Email all board members at trustees@austinisd.org.
  • Bring written remarks, not bound by time limits, to the meeting and give them to the Community Engagement Coordinator on duty or place them in the comment box located near the room’s entrance/exit.
  • Write comments on note cards provided at the meeting and hand them to the Community Engagement Coordinator on duty or place them in the comment box located near the entrance/exit.

May I bring a poster or sign to the meeting?

Board policy BED (LOCAL) allows posters and signs to be displayed behind the last row of seats or against the side walls of the board auditorium so they do not block other members of the public. Speakers at the podium may hold a paper sign, size 8.5” x 11” or smaller. Speakers may not be accompanied to the podium by other people.
