Members of the community are invited to address the Austin ISD School Board during the public comment period at regularly scheduled board meetings. Each speaker is limited to two minutes, with a limit of 30 speakers. Speakers are called in the order in which they signed up.
Those who wish to speak during public comment may sign up by phone or in person on the Friday before the meeting or on the day of the meeting.
Sign-up is from 1 to 4:45 p.m. the Friday before a regular board meeting, or 7:45 a.m. to 7 p.m. the day of the regular board meeting. (Note: if signing up on the day of the meeting, it must be in person from 4:45 to 7 p.m.)
For phone registration sign up, call (512) 414-4411. On the day of the board meeting, you can sign up by phone or in the Superintendent's Office during regular business hours of 7:45 a.m.–4:45 p.m. or in the Board Auditorium from 4:45–7 pm.
Speakers will be asked to provide the following information:
- Speaker's name
- Group or organization the speaker represents (if applicable)
- Subject to be addressed
- Telephone number
An individual may not sign up for another person, nor can speakers exchange time or yield time to others.
In the event Austin ISD is closed on the Friday before a regular board meeting, public comment registration will be the business day prior to the board’s regular meeting that the district is open. Registration will still be available the day of the meeting.
The board may schedule public hearings to gather input on a particular subject. If you wish to speak during a public hearing, the process to sign up is the same as with public comment.
Sign-up is available until the beginning of the hearing.
No person is permitted to sign up on behalf of another person nor to exchange or yield time to others. There is no limit to the number of speakers who may speak, but the board designates the number of minutes allowed per speaker. If there are fewer than 40 speakers, each speaker will be allotted two minutes. For 40 or more speakers, one-and-one-half minutes are given.
The format of public hearings is set at the discretion of the board.
