Recently I had the pleasure of visiting Woolridge Elementary School. I visited the classroom of Ms. Andi Forness, a bilingual teacher who was implementing Creative Learning Initiative Strategies. This was a fantastic classroom experience where students acted out feelings as characters experienced them in text—a CLI teaching strategy called “statues.” What a joyful classroom environment! Thank you, Ms. Forness, for offering a wonderful classroom experience for our students. You made me #AISDProud!

I'm excited to attend and speak at the Austin Ed Fund's Inspire the Future Luncheon! This event is the Austin Ed Fund's largest fundraiser of the year and brings together 650+ community supporters and educators—all in support of our students. Funds raised support the Inspire the Future Grants Program which funds innovative projects at schools across Austin ISD. Learn more about the Austin Ed Fund, and if you are inspired to donate, there’s still time to visit their donations page. Remember—when we have Strong Schools, we have a Stronger Austin.

After Inspire the Future, I’ll head back to the office to meet with Senior Leaders and receive a quarterly financial report from our CFO. We will also receive an update from our Chief of Police, Wayne Sneed, on the police department's expenses to support HB3. We have already started budgeting for the 2024-25 school year, so receiving quarterly financial reports helps us plan.

Tuesday, October 31
Today is always a high-energy day at schools—lots of excitement and anticipation for the evening’s events. If you choose to trick-or-treat this evening, please bundle up and be safe.

I’ll start my day by having my one-on-one meeting with Trustee Zapata. After that, I’ll join my old friends on the 4th floor for their Annual Chili Cook-Off. In the afternoon, I will get an update on the 2022 Bond Program and attend the Governance Meeting with the Board.

I’ll spend the evening negotiating with my family for the dark chocolate in their bounty.

Wednesday, November 1
This morning I’ll start my day one-on-one with Dr. Hawley, Chief of the Office of Organizational Transformation (formerly the Office of Equity). I’ll then meet with our Academics Team and Trustee Kauffman to review our Multilingual Education Initiative. In the middle of the day, I’ll spend some time with other Central Texas Superintendents at the University of Texas to discuss the Power of Research Partnerships. In the afternoon, I’ll meet with Trustee Hunter for our one-on-one.

Thursday, November 2
Today I’ll meet with Ricardo Zavala, the President of Dove Springs Proud. I’ll then spend time with Trustee Zapata to reflect on our Summer Youth Employment program; this was an excellent opportunity for students to gain employment skills throughout the City of Austin. For lunch, I’ll meet with Ken Zarifis from Education Austin. In the afternoon, I’ll attend our Executive Leadership Team meeting so we can ensure organizational alignment. Later in the day, I’ll have a one-on-one with Dr. Jacob Reach, our Chief of Governmental Relations & Board Services.

Friday, November 3
On Friday, my team will be at the Holdsworth Center for day one of the Texas Urban Council Retreat. The Texas Urban Council (TUC) consists of 11 urban districts in Texas: Aldine, Alief, Austin, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, and Ysleta. We gather together to analyze data and learn about promising practices. The focus of this meeting is Early Literacy outcomes and College, Career and Military Readiness, and it lasts throughout the weekend.

Last week, I was pleased to meet Mr. Joe Rodriguez at Akins ECHS. Mr. Rodriguez has been with the district for many years. Realizing how important it is for students to have positive relationships with the adults in the building, he decided to go back to school to get his certification. This allowed him to become a teaching assistant and continue supporting our students at the place he loves—Akins ECHS. To visit with someone who loves Austin ISD as much as I do was such a pleasure. Mr. Rodriguez, thank you for everything you do for our Akins Eagles. You make us #AISDProud!

As promised, we do want to provide you with an update on our Special Education Initiative. October 31 is our first big deliverable to the Texas Education Agency. This is a tremendous lift for our staff, and we appreciate all they do to help us provide the best services to our students.

Next week I’ll be engaged in professional learning with the Council of Great City Schools and at Holdsworth Center, so I thought we’d do something a little different.

As you know, Ms. Paty Rodriguez joined our team in August as the new Deputy Superintendent of the Office of Teaching, Learning and Leading. Ms. Rodriguez is responsible for the core work of our school district—here’s the TLL organizational chart. We thought this week we’d give you a glimpse into what the week of a Deputy Superintendent looks like.

I’ll start my day by visiting a few elementary campuses. Then I’ll head back to the office for our weekly Senior Leadership Team Meeting. I’ll meet with the Assistant Superintendents for our weekly connect meeting in the afternoon. Later in the day, I’ll work with the team to prepare for the November 9 Board Meeting.

Tuesday, October 24
Today, I will be at a full-day meeting about the budget process for the 2023-24 school year. Austin ISD adopted a $55 Million deficit budget for this school year. This meeting allows district leadership to see where we are in the current budget and identify opportunities for cost reduction. While we are strategically working to stretch every dollar we currently have, we hope the Texas Legislature will consider increasing the per-pupil allotment soon. Wednesday, October 25
I’ll start my day at Pickle Elementary to learn about their Discovery Den kickoff. The Discovery Den program revitalizes 16 elementary school libraries by the Defend the Dream Foundation and Derrick Johnson. Pickle Elementary was fortunate enough to receive 629 books, 8 soft cushion kid-friendly seats and new carpet for the story steps. After that, I will visit a few middle school campuses. The afternoon is dedicated to meeting with my elementary team to analyze current data and make plans to support students.

Thursday, October 26
On Thursday morning, I will attend Chiefs Corner. We meet once a week to workshop and vet ideas with one another and ensure all of the different departments in the organization are aligned to support the work that happens in our schools each day. From there, I’ll head to a luncheon with the Christi Center. The Christi Center is a fantastic organization that provides support networks, community education, and therapeutic activities that are free, peer-based and ongoing. In the afternoon, I’ll meet with Dr. Dru Robinett and her Special Education team to review our upcoming submission to TEA.

Friday, October 27
I’ll start my day with my Directors Connect Meeting. This is an opportunity for the Directors within Teaching, Learning and Leading to calibrate and ensure alignment across the department. In the middle of the day, we’ll meet to work on professional development offerings for the upcoming semester and next school year. In the afternoon, I will interview a principal candidate and have time to prepare for the upcoming week.

La semana pasada, tuve el gusto de conocer al Sr. Joe Rodríguez en la Preparatoria Akins. El Sr. Rodríguez ha estado en el distrito muchos años. Al darse cuenta de la importancia que tiene para los estudiantes contar con relaciones positivas con los adultos en el edificio, él decidió regresar a la escuela para obtener su certificación. Esto le permitió convertirse en un asistente de maestro y continuar apoyando a nuestros estudiantes en el lugar que ama, la Preparatoria Akins. Empezaré mi día con mi junta de conexión con directores (Directors Connect). Esta es una oportunidad para los directores dentro de Enseñanza, Aprendizaje y Liderazgo para calibrar y asegurar la alineación entre el departamento. A mediados del día, me reuniré para trabajar en las ofertas de capacitación profesional para el próximo semestre y el próximo ciclo escolar. I’m so glad we are re-connecting!

In this edition of the Appitol News, we will connect through 🌳 trees. We will talk about some baby trees and about some heritage trees. We will also talk about how these trees have become symbols that hold communities together even after their school community is gone.

Some of those trees 🌳 are turning one. And, as you may know, the first anniversary is celebrated with paper. But there are several 50th - or gold 🥇anniversaries - that I’d love for you to also read about.

And as a school district - one of the largest in the nation - there’s no way around it - Austin ISD is closely watching the stories about school vouchers. This matters.

From Paper to Gold Part I - Paper

Part I - Paper

When Austin ISD closed four schools in 2019, the communities around those schools were left to deal with a lot of trauma.

The reality is, a school is more than a school.

For some, it is a safe haven. For others, it is the source of community and pride.

It’s been a few years. And, as we collectively talk about how to repurpose those campuses, I have noticed how trees are at the center of many conversations.

This week, I joined Jeremy Striffler, from Austin ISD’s Real Estate Department, in a listening session about the repurposing of the former Sims Elementary.

The phrase I heard the most from community members had to do with preserving the heritage trees on site. They are majestic.

There is also an important tree on the campus of the former Pease Elementary.

This one even has a name. It’s called “Cupcake” - you guessed it! It’s shaped like a cupcake!

And one year ago the community decided to grow some baby trees or saplings out of Cupcake. The saplings will be celebrating their paper anniversary next week!

Former Pease parent and landscape architect with dwg, Daniel Woodroffe, commented on how meaningful the tree continues to be:

Flo is another tree that brought Austinites together.

And as the world continues to change, we begin to understand our responsibility toward trees and their preservation. They do much more than filter the air. They keep drawing us back to a place of community.

At the young age of 142, Austin ISD existed before the Texas Capitol was built!

There is a lot of history here.

Some schools date back more than 100 years.

Some are much more modern.

In between, there is an astounding legacy of schools and programs that are celebrating their golden anniversaries in 2023. Fifty years ago the “new” Anderson High School came together and earlier this year, some alumni had a fantastic celebration.

I can only imagine what 1973 must have been like in Austin!

The Annual Marching Band Jamboree also began that year.

The celebrations for the 50th anniversary of LBJ Early College High School won’t kick off until next semester.

But people celebrate its enduring legacy all the time.

The campus has a “Wall of Fame”. It is a tangible way to honor each person who has graduated from LBJ. You can often see parents or grandparents pointing to their names on the wall to show their kids or grandkids that they too bleed purple - because purple is LBJ’s color!

Sheila Henry served as principal there for about a decade.

The fear back in 2010—when she started—was that the school would close.

Today, Henry is serving as interim principal and she lists some of the many school accomplishments. For instance, LBJ is an early college high school with innovative facilities and programs.

Investing in children is the best investment.

1 big thing: Increased school funding could come at the cost of vouchers

As the second week of the special legislative session started, Austin ISD has its eye on two important bills passed by the Senate: SB 1 and SB 2.

SB 1 would give some Texas families tax dollars to pay for private school, commonly referred to as school vouchers.

Shortly after the Senate’s approval of SB 1, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said he would add school funding to the topics legislators may cover in the special session, but only if the voucher bill becomes law.

The Senate then passed SB 2, which would inject $5.2 billion into school districts— if the House accepts the voucher bill.

Level set: That number is far shy of the $14 billion that would be needed just to return to pre-pandemic funding levels, adjusted for inflation.

What they’re saying: The big question is whether the House will stand firmly against vouchers or take the deal.

What’s next: It now falls to members of the Texas House to take up each of the bills.

What is Joy thinking?

We wrapped up the celebrations for Hispanic Heritage Month and I wanted to share an image of my niece. Family is important. Part of my family is Israeli and we were able to reunite this week in Austin amid the suffering and all out war. May peace return.

¡Me alegro mucho que nos volvamos a conectar!

En esta edición del Appitol News, nuestra conexión será a través de varios 🌳 árboles. Hablaremos de algunos árboles bebés y de algunos árboles patrimoniales. También hablaremos de cómo estos árboles son parte del simbolismo que mantiene a varias comunidades unidas aún después de que su comunidad escolar desapareció.

Uno de esos 🌳 árboles está cumpliendo un añito. Y, como sabrán, el primer aniversario se celebra con papel. Pero hay varios aniversarios número 50 (o aniversarios de 🥇 oro) sobre los que me encantaría que leyeran.

Y, como distrito escolar (somos uno de los más grandes distritos del país) no hay forma de evitarlo, estamos siguiendo muy de cerca la trayectoria de los vales escolares. Es una noticia muy importante.

Del Papel al Oro - Primera Parte

Cuando el Austin ISD se vio obligado a cerrar cuatro planteles escolares en el 2019, las comunidades alrededor de esas escuelas tuvieron que lidiar con mucho trauma.

Porque una escuela es más que una escuela.

Para algunos, es un refugio seguro. Para otros es la conexión a la comunidad y una fuente de orgullo.

Ya pasaron algunos años. Y hemos estando hablando - de manera colectiva - sobre cómo podemos reutilizar esos planteles. En muchas de esas conversaciones he notado que los árboles juegan un papel importante en la vida de las comunidades.

Esta semana, me uní a Jeremy Striffler, del Departamento de Bienes Raíces del Austin ISD, en una sesión comunitaria sobre la reutilización de la antigua Primaria Sims.

La frase que escuché con mayor frecuencia por parte de los miembros de la comunidad tuvo que ver con la preservación de los árboles patrimoniales del lugar.

Son verdaderamente majestuosos.

También hay un árbol importante en el campus de la antigua escuela primaria Pease.

Este incluso tiene nombre. Se llama "Cupcake", ¡adivinaron! ¡Tiene forma de cupcake on panquecito!

Hace un año, la comunidad decidió cultivar algunos árboles bebés o retoños de Cupcake. ¡Los retoñitos están por celebrar su primer cumpleaños o su aniversario de papel la próxima semana!

Daniel Woodroffe, padre de familia que antes iba a Pease es también arquitecto de dwg y comentó lo significativo que sigue siendo el árbol:

Flo es otro árbol que ha logrado unificar a los habitantes de Austin.

Del Papel al Oro - Segunda Parte

¡A los 142 años de vida, el Austin ISD es un jovenazo! Ya existíamos antes de que se construyera el Capitolio de Texas. Imagínense.

Hay historias muy ricas en este distrito escolar.

Algunas escuelas datan de más de 100 años.

Algunas son mucho más modernas.

Y hay un legado asombroso de escuelas y programas que celebran sus aniversarios de oro en el 2023. Hace cincuenta años se formó la “nueva” Escuela Preparatoria Anderson. A principios de este año, algunos ex-alumnos tuvieron una hermosa celebración.

¡No puedo imaginarme el Austin del año 1973! Debió ser fascinante.

Ese año se dio inicio el Jamboree Anual de las Bandas de Guerra del Austin ISD.

Las celebraciones por el 50 aniversario del LBJECHS comenzarán el próximo semestre.

Pero la gente celebra su legado todo el tiempo.

El campus tiene un “Muro de la Fama”.

Es una pared que honra de manera tangible a cada persona que se graduó de LBJ. A menudo puede usted ver a padres o a abuelos buscando sus nombres en la pared para mostrarles a sus hijos o nietos que ellos también sangran color morado - puesto que el morado es el color de la escuela.

Sheila Henry fue directora allí durante aproximadamente una década.

En el 2010, cuando Henry llegó a la escuela, el temor era que la escuela tuviera que cerrar sus puertas.

Hoy en día, Henry está de directora suplente y ha visto la transformación de LBJ a una escuela preparatoria que cuenta con el programa de universidad temprana, con instalaciones modernas y con programas innovadores.

Invertir en los niños es la mejor inversión.

¡Feliz cumpleaños número 50 - feliz aniversario de oro!

Algo importante: El aumento del financiamiento escolar podría venir a costa de los vales

Al comenzar la segunda semana de la sesión legislativa especial, el Austin ISD tiene su mirada puesta sobre dos proyectos de ley importantes aprobados que el Senado de Texas ya aprobó (SB, por sus siglas en inglés): SB 1 y SB 2.

El SB 1 les daría a algunas familias de Texas dinero público de los impuestos para pagar escuelas privadas, lo cual comúnmente se conoce como vales escolares.

Poco después de que el Senado aprobara el SB 1, el gobernador de Texas Greg Abbott dijo que añadiría más presupuesto a las escuelas pero sólo si el proyecto de ley de los vales se convierte en ley.

Luego el Senado aprobó el SB 2, que inyectaría $5,200 millones a los distritos escolares... si la Cámara de Representantes acepta el proyecto de ley de los vales.

Lo que están diciendo: La principal pregunta es si la Cámara de Representantes se opondrá firmemente a los vales o si aceptará el trato.

¿Cuál es el siguiente paso? Ahora la responsabilidad de aceptar cada uno de los proyectos de ley recae sobre los miembros de la Cámara de Representantes de Texas.

Terminamos las celebraciones del Mes de la Herencia Hispana y quería compartirles una imagen de mi sobrina. La familia es una parte importantísima de nuestras vidas. Parte de mi familia es israelí y pudieron llegar a Austin el miércoles de esta semana. Sé que muchas personas están sufriendo durante esta guerra. Mi petición es que reine la paz.

🚌 This week, we're appreciating Austin ISD's transportation team for their commitment. In this edition— meet a devoted school bus driver who does her part every day to keep students safe.

🎃 As Halloween approaches many children traditionally go trick or treating, it is a good time to raise awareness for "Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Month" in Texas. Important to check the candies before your children eat them.

❤ And speaking of raising awareness against drugs- Red Ribbon Week is coming up and this year's theme is— Be Kind to Your Mind, Live Drug Free.

1 big thing: Increased school funding could come at the cost of vouchers

As the second week of the special legislative session started, Austin ISD has its eye on two important bills passed by the Senate: SB 1 and SB 2.

SB 1 would give some Texas families tax dollars to pay for private school, commonly referred to as school vouchers.

Shortly after the Senate’s approval of SB 1, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said he would add school funding to the topics legislators may cover in the special session, but only if the voucher bill becomes law.

The Senate then passed SB 2, which would inject $5.2 billion into school districts— if the House accepts the voucher bill.

Level set: That number is far shy of the $14 billion that would be needed just to return to pre-pandemic funding levels, adjusted for inflation.

What they’re saying: The big question is whether the House will stand firmly against vouchers or take the deal.

What’s next: It now falls to members of the Texas House to take up each of the bills.

October 16-20 is Austin ISD Transportation Employees Appreciation Week and we would like to shine a spotlight on the extraordinary individuals who make up the Austin ISD transportation team— meet Rae Hudson.

After a 20-years administrative career, in 2015 Rae Hudson bravely embraced a new chapter of her life and started a new career.

Eight years on, she continues to passionately serve as an Austin ISD bus driver.

As a mother of four children, Hudson already has one of the most vital attributes required for engaging with students—patience. But even though it might seem like her job is easy, it is far from it.

Hispanic Heritage's Talent Show "Join the Fiesta!" Awards Ceremony

Thank you to all who participated in the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration talent show this past Saturday, Oct. 14.

During the ceremony the winners showcased their talents, captivating the audience with their amazing performances in singing, dancing, music and art. This is the fourth year that Austin ISD has held this talent show.

Austin ISD Police Trunk or Treat!

This year is the 4th annual “Trunk or Treat” Halloween event. It’s an opportunity for children and their families to come out and enjoy a safe trick or treating environment while getting to interact with our Austin ISD police officers.

🕸🕷We like to decorate the house, dress up and go trick-or-treating. We have a tradition of watching horror movies throughout the month...any recommendations?

Por fin ha llegado el clima fresco a nuestra area, espero que lo esten disfrutando. 🧥

🚌 Esta semana estamos celebrando y agradeciendo a todos los empleados del departamento de transporte de Austin ISD por su dedicación y arduo trabajo. En esta edición- te presentamos a una conductora de autobús escolar que hace su parte todos los días para mantener a los estudiantes seguros.

🎃 A medida que se acerca Halloween muchos niños salen tradicionalmente a pedir caramelos, es un buen momento para crear conciencia sobre el "Mes de Concientización de Envenenamiento por Fentanilo" en Texas. Es importante revisar los dulces antes de que los niños los coman.

❤ Y hablando de concienciar contra las drogas- Se acerca la Semana del Liston Rojo y el tema de este año es- Sé amable con tu mente, vive sin drogas.

🗓 Antes de empezar con este tema, no olviden que HOY a las 6 pm hay Junta Ordinaria de Votación de la mesa directiva.

“Somos las ruedas del distrito”

La Semana de Agradecimiento a los Empleados de Transporte del Austin ISD es del 16 al 20 de octubre, y nos gustaría destacar a las extraordinarias personas que conforman el equipo de transporte del Austin ISD: conozcan a Rae Hudson.

Después de 20 años de carrera administrativa, en el 2015 Rae Hudson emprendió con valentía un nuevo capítulo de su vida y comenzó una nueva carrera.

"Quería trabajar en el distrito porque tenía hijos en el distrito", dijo Hudson.

Ocho años después, continúa sirviendo apasionadamente como conductora de autobús del Austin ISD.

"Me encantó, me encantó absolutamente, y nunca he mirado hacia atrás para cambiar a otra cosa".

Lo que más le gusta de su ruta de 100 millas son sus estudiantes:

"Tenemos una relación en la que realmente nos preocupamos los unos por los otros y nos respetamos".

Durante la ceremonia los ganadores mostraron sus talentos en canto, baile, música y arte. Este es el cuarto año que Austin ISD realiza este concurso de talentos.

“Trunk or Treat” de la Policía del Austin ISD

Este es el 4º evento anual del Día de Brujas "Trunk or Treat". Es una oportunidad para que los niños y sus familias salgan y disfruten de un ambiente seguro mientras interactúan con los oficiales de policía del distrito.

🕸🕷Nos gusta decorar la casa, disfrazarnos y salir a pedir dulces. Tenemos la costumbre de ver películas de terror durante todo el mes... ¿Tienen alguna recomendación?
