Eastside Community Harvest Festival

Austin ISD invites the community to Eastside Community Harvest Festival 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Nov. 10 at Eastside Memorial Early College High School.  

Please join us as we showcase our Eastside Memorial family of schools and learn more from exhibitors, family resources, health and dental services, flu shots, Blue Santa, employment, housing education, legal services, after-school and summer camp opportunities, enjoy live music performances, athletics, food and lots of fun for all ages.  

MEDIA ADVISORY Austin Ed Fund, Donors to Tour Campus Mental Health Center 

Austin ISD staff and donors will visit a campus mental health center to learn more about counseling and mental health support for students. The Austin Ed Fund recently secured $1.3 million in donations from the Austin Community Foundation, Ascension Texas Foundations, the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation and the St. David’s Foundation to fully fund 16 campus mental health centers in the district. 

MEDIA ADVISORY AISD Hosts ‘Coco’ Community Screening in Celebration of Día de los Muertos 

The Austin ISD community is invited to a celebration of Día de los Muertos, including a screening the film, “Coco,” food and children’s activities. Families are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs and join the festivities. 

This event will bring together the Metz, Sanchez and Zavala elementary school communities and the greater East Austin neighborhood for a night of family fun. These school stakeholders have been working together on the 2017 Bond project that will invest $25 million to modernize Sanchez and several hundred thousand dollars into Metz and Zavala.

Join us for Encore: Student and Family Conference & Multi-cultural Resource Fair at Webb Middle School, 601 E. St. John Avenue.

Budget Briefs: Task Force Subcommittees Present Work, Agree to Additional Meeting

The three Budget Stabilization Task Force subcommittees presented their preliminary recommendations and supporting information for consideration by the group as a whole at the Oct. 24 meeting. The ninth meeting of the task force provided an opportunity for the group to hear in-depth analysis from each subcommittee and their specific proposals so the entire task force could either accept the draft recommendations as proposed, reject or make amendments to recommendations.

AISD Alumni Spotlight: Miriam Reyes Juarez

When Miriam Reyes Juarez says William B. Travis Early College High School feels like home, she means it. 

“I kind of never left this place,” said Reyes Juarez, who was a drum major her senior year and ranked third in her class when she graduated in 2012. After leaving Travis High, Reyes Juarez attended the University of Texas in Austin, where she earned a degree in biology and received a teaching certificate. 

She said that it was at Travis High School, however, where she discovered her passion for engineering and where she met lifelong mentors. 

AISD Board of Trustees Approve Principal for Akins

The Austin ISD Board of Trustees approved the appointment of Tina Salazar to serve as principal of Akins High at its Oct. 29 meeting.

Salazar most recently served as the interim principal of Akins where she has also been an English department chair, instructional lead teacher and coach. She has six years of administrative experience and served in the classroom for a total of 21 years.

Salazar has a bachelor's degree in English writing from St. Edward's University and a master's degree in education from Concordia University.
