Overview

Metz Elementary School is a 61,905 square foot school facility constructed in 1993 situated on a 5.79 acre site located in East Austin, bound by Anthony Street, Willow Street, Robert T. Martinez Jr. Street, and Garden Street.

Metz closed after the 2019-2020 school year. Its student population is now a part of Sanchez Elementary School, which is within a newly modernized school located at 73 San Marcos Street. 

Over the past two years, Metz has served as a community resource. Austin Public Health utilized the facility as a COVID-19 testing clinic and vaccine distribution site. 

Current Status

As of Summer 2023, it will be home to the Austin ISD Department of Health Services and Nursing (HSN),  Library Media Center (LMC) and the Science and Health Resource Center (SHRC), both of which support district campuses. 

• The AISD Department of Health Services supports the health of students, staff, and families. This consists of full-time AISD school nurses and health room assistants, in addition to student health services provided by Ascension Seton and EDU Healthcare in every campus health room, vision and hearing screening as required by Board Policy FFAA, and Public Health initiatives to support holistic student wellness i.e. COVID-19 response and immunizations.
• The LMC offers a wide number of resources to staff and faculty. It provides cataloging and processing of library materials as well as curriculum support materials for use in all campus libraries. It also maintains the digital catalog and library automation system for Austin ISD school libraries, evaluates online resources and helps librarians with technology needs. 
• The SHRC staff create K-5 science kits aligned to the curriculum for all elementary science teachers. The center also supports K - 12 science classrooms with additional materials they may need for their science classroom, such as butterfly larvae, agar plates and lab equipment. It will also offer field trip opportunities for all campuses to explore nature, play, meet our reptiles and learn about their habitats, and visit the planetarium.
