What is an Educational Suitability Assessment?
An Educational Suitability Assessment (ESA) evaluates how well a school facility supports teaching, learning, and student success. Grounded in the district’s Educational Specifications (Ed Specs), the assessment examines how effectively learning environments align with the district’s vision for educational programming, instructional practices, and student needs.
While a Facility Condition Assessment focuses on the physical condition of a building, an ESA focuses on how effectively the building's spaces support the educational program being delivered today.
The goal is to answer the question:
Does this facility support the way students learn and teachers teach today?
What is evaluated?
An ESA looks at how school spaces function and support educational needs, including:
- Classrooms and learning environments
- Career and technical education spaces
- Science labs and specialized instructional areas
- Libraries and media centers
- Fine arts and athletic facilities
- Student collaboration spaces
- Technology infrastructure
- Safety and security features
- Furniture, fixtures, and equipment
- Outdoor learning environments
- Building flexibility and adaptability
- Support spaces for students and staff
The assessment considers how well spaces support current instructional practices as well as future educational needs.
Why is an ESA important?
Educational practices continue to evolve. Schools today often require different types of learning environments than they did 20, 30, or 50 years ago.
An ESA helps identify where facilities may no longer align with educational goals, instructional programs, technology needs, or student expectations.
The assessment helps the district understand:
- Whether learning spaces support student learning
- Whether facilities support current curriculum and programming
- Where there are opportunities to improve educational environments
- Future facility needs across the district
How is the information used?
Educational Suitability Assessment results help Austin ISD understand how facilities support student learning and district priorities.
The findings are combined with Facility Condition Assessment data, accessibility assessments, enrollment trends, district initiatives, and other planning information to help identify future Capital Expenditure.
The assessment does not evaluate teachers, principals, staff, or student performance. It evaluates how well the facility supports the educational experience.

- Do classrooms support current instructional practices?
- Are specialized programs housed in appropriate spaces?
- Does the building support future technology needs?
- Are learning environments flexible enough to adapt to changing educational priorities?

The answers to these questions help the district identify opportunities to improve learning environments for current and future students.
