AISD Board of Trustees Votes on Final Annual Academic and Facilities Recommendations

Austin, TX—Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees voted to approve five Annual Academic and Facilities Recommendations, including expanding dual language immersion programs, addressing overcrowding in north central elementary schools and creating an in-district charter to strengthen graduation pathways.

Update on Dyslexia Programming

The first of a series of video courses featuring multisensory reading strategies is in the final phase of development and will soon be made available to classroom teachers through the E-campus system. These video courses will provide teachers access to high-yield instructional strategies designed to support all struggling readers, including students with dyslexia. Training for campus dyslexia designees has been offered beginning in October and continuing into November.

Harris Elementary Career Day & MindPOP Arts Showcase

On Nov. 11, AISD and coordinating organization MindPOP hosted 200 teachers at Lamar Middle School to discuss integrating arts curriculum in the classroom. Local arts organizations were on hand to talk to teachers about their programming and how it might fullfill their curriculum needs. Austin Film Society Filmmaking Mentor Jill Hall and Community Education Manager Katy Daiger Dial showcased AFS' varied youth education programming, including the Film Club afterschool program.

Fourth and Eighth Grade Students Rank High on Nation’s Report Card

Superintendent Meria Carstarphen announced today that AISD’s fourth and eighth grade students continued to outperform their peers in large cities and other urban school districts on the 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as the Nation’s Report Card. The results for the 21 urban districts that participated in this year’s Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) of the NAEP were released today in Washington, D.C.

Students Named Semi-finalists in Prestigious Siemens Competition

Four AISD students have been named semifinalists in the 2011 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology, the nation’s premier science research competition for high school students. This competition recognizes remarkable talent early on, fostering individual growth for high school students who are willing to challenge themselves through science research. Students also have an opportunity to achieve national recognition for science research projects that they complete in high school.

Anderson "Apple at Work" Bond Showcase Dec. 9

Come celebrate Anderson High School's pursuit of excellence at their “Apple at Work” Bond Showcase Friday, Dec. 9, at 5 p.m. (seated program begins at 6:30 p.m.). The event includes an open house to view how students are using the facility.
