TEA Releases List of Public Education Grant Schools

On Dec. 8, the Texas Education Agency released the list of schools identified under the Public Education Grant program for the 2012-13 school year. The TEA places schools on the list if 50 percent or more of their students failed any TAKS subject area in two of the preceding three years (2009, 2010 or 2011), or if the school was rated Academically Unacceptable under the state accountability system in (2009, 2010 or 2011). A parent of a student enrolled at any of the campuses listed may apply to attend a non-PEG campus within AISD, or another school district for the 2012-13 school year.

Oak Springs Student Wins Winter Poem Card Contest

Oak Springs fourth-grader Rebecca Salazar earned the Badgerdog Literary Publishing’s winter poem card contest. Badgerdog is an Austin-based nonprofit organization that provides creative writing workshops to schools, offering programs that emphasize publication, performance and creative expression.

Rebecca’s winning poem, “Purple Firework, Blue Sky,” will be published in a card for local restaurants during the New Year’s holiday. Guests dining in these restaurants will receive a copy of Rebecca’s poem when they receive their bill. Congratulations to Rebecca for her amazing work!

General Transfers to Thirty Three Schools Frozen

Each year, the Austin Independent School District reviews each school’s capacity to determine which schools should be frozen to transfers. Transfers are frozen for schools that have, or are expected to have, enrollments that exceed their capacities. Also, some schools are frozen to maintain stability in tracking patterns. Based on expected enrollments and school tracking patterns for the 2012-13 school year, 33 schools will be frozen to general transfers and an additional 22 schools will be monitored for available space, after priority transfers are approved.

Libraries Collaborate with Austin Children’s Museum

Libraries in twelve schools are participating in “Cuentos de Familia/Family Stories,” a partnership between the Austin Children’s Museum and AISD. The project was inspired by the family storytelling themes of renowned artist Carmen Lomas Garza and the museum’s exhibit “En mi Familia/In My Family” based on the artist’s award-winning picture books. Third grade students in participating schools are reading, reflecting, discussing, writing and drawing to explore their own family traditions and cultural identities.
