Austin ISD Special Olympics offers sports training and competition in a variety of sports for persons with intellectual disabilities or closely related developmental disabilities, beginning at age 8. Training and competition opportunities occur at the local, regional, and state levels for eligible athletes. Austin ISD Special Olympics strongly encourages parental support and involvement in this extracurricular endeavor. Volunteer and service learning initiatives are also emphasized for secondary students and adults who are interested.

There are 3 main events that we are encouraging participation in during the 2026-2027 school year; Bowling, Soccer, and a Torch Run – we have collaborated in advance with the Austin ISD Transportation Department to ensure all campuses have an opportunity to access practices and competitions should they choose to do so.

Event 1: Austin ISD Special Olympics Bowling

Special Olympics Bowling gives our student-athletes a structured, high-energy sport season featuring two dedicated practices and an official competition.

EVENT & SCHEDULE DETAILS

Practices (Sept & Oct — 1 per month)

  • Dates:  Your case manager will provide the dates of your child’s practices.
  • Location: Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex (MEC) | 1156 Hargrave St, Austin, TX 
  • Time:  AISD Bus pickup at 9:45 AM; departs MEC at 12:00 PM 
  • Parent Transportation:  Parents meet students at the MEC in the cafe.
  • Details: Open to Life Skills & 18+. *We will offer a private adult-sized changing table.

Bowling Competition (One Day the Week of Nov 3 or Nov 9)

  • Location: Spare Time Pflugerville | 1724 FM 685, Pflugerville, TX
  • Date/Time: Schedule provided Nov 1 by Kimberly Davis, kndavis@sotx.org.
  • Details: 
    • Ages 5–7: Attend to cheer
    • Ages 8+: Compete (assisted ramp available)
    • Unified Partners: Welcome to compete!

SPECTATOR INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

To keep practices and competitions structured, only designated AISD school staff and registered coaches will be permitted directly in the lane/pit areas with athletes.

Parent Checklist

  • Field Trip Permission Form: Parents must complete and return the official field trip form provided by your child's Case Manager prior to the event.
  • Athlete Registration (Deadline: September 18, 2026):

    • Required for all participating students. Ensure your child is registered in the Special Olympics Portal under Delegation Number: 13.AIC.Austin ISD Capitals

Event 2: Special Olympics Soccer Tournament (Spring 2027)

The spring soccer tournament brings together athletes from newly added campuses to train, collaborate, and compete in official, sanctioned Special Olympics events.

Event 3: Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run Fundraiser (April 2027)

In mid-April, our community will come together at City Hall with an inaugural, one-mile Torch Run in partnership with the Austin Police Department. This spectacular event unites athletes, families, and local heroes to champion inclusion. For more information, please click this link.

  • Show your team spirit with an official Austin ISD Capitals t-shirt! Shirts are available for athletes, Unified partners, teachers, parents, and supporters.
