Matias's Weekly
I want to start off this week’s message thanking Austin ISD for all the support over the last year. I am honored to be serving as the Superintendent in the district that I know and love with all my heart. We’re going to do great things for students and families in our city.
Last week I got to visit Davis Elementary, where I stopped by Ms. Nicole Crowe’s classroom and saw an exemplary teacher in action. Her students were all engaged in independent work while she worked with a group of students. Ms. Crowe never stopped teaching and engaging with students the whole time we were in her classroom. As I visited with students, they shared with me what they were working on and learning. It was an amazing classroom to be in and to see how she structured a learning environment where students were so engaged and invested in their work.
Another thing I’ve noticed as I walk campuses is all of our beautiful murals and mosaics. There isn’t a campus I visit where I’m not struck by the beautiful art created by communities — one of the qualities that makes Austin so Austin! I love it, and I hope you do too! Have a great week, everyone!

Where I’ll be and who I’ll meet
Monday, January 29
I’ll start the day by visiting our AVID/Gear Up Senior Workshop. I’m excited to check in with these students and see how their senior year is going. I’ll head downtown to have a 1:1 with Brandi Hosack, and then we’ll hold our weekly leadership team meeting at the Austin Chamber of Commerce. From there, I’ll head to the Holdsworth Center and stop by the Coalition to Reimagine the Teaching Role. I’ll then head back into the city to attend the TASA Midwinter Conference.
Tuesday, January 30
I’ll meet with Dr. Steve Flores, the current Interim Superintendent of Pflugerville ISD, this morning. I’ll also spend some time talking with Laura Huffman from the City of Austin, who is a consultant in change management. I’ll then spend the rest of the day attending the TASA Midwinter Conference. This is a wonderful yearly event where administrators from all over the state gather in Austin in January to present promising practices and key learnings in their district.
Wednesday, January 31
Today I’ll attend the final day of TASA Midwinter and meet with Jeff Conovan, superintendent of Dime Box ISD, as part of the Region XIII Superintendent Certification Program. I’ll then head back to the office to meet with a community partner. I have a Governance Meeting in the afternoon with our board officers (President Singh, Vice President Foster, and Board Secretary Boswell). I’ll end the day meeting with our Austin Association of Public School Administrators.
Thursday, February 1
Happy February! I’ll start my day at the office with the Pan-African Flag Raising Ceremony to kick off Black History Month Celebrations across the district. Black History Month provides an opportunity for a deeper exploration of Black and African-American history. Each campus receives resources, and campuses are encouraged to collaborate with students and staff to design Black History Month activities that engage, educate and inspire.
After the festivities of the morning, I’ll meet with Ashly Paz, our Lone Star Governance Coach, and Dr. Ray Hart, the Executive Director of the Council of Great City Schools. I’m meeting with them so we can plan the development of our new scorecard goals and progress measures. I’ll then meet with Ken Zarifis, president of Education Austin. I’ll meet with Zack Craddock of Third Future in the afternoon, our 1882 Partner at Mendez Middle School. I’ll then meet with Trustee Lugo for our monthly one-on-one and attend our Executive Leadership Team meeting. I’ll end the workday at the Holdsworth Center to attend the Austin 100 Retreat. Before I head home, I’ll swing by my old middle school, Covington Middle School, to see the Colts' production of Mean Girls!
Friday, February 2
“Ok, campers! Rise and shine!” It’s Groundhog Day! It’s also “Wear Red Day” to support heart health! There’s a lot happening this month, for sure.
February is American Heart Month, and our Coordinated School Health teams have lots happening in our schools to help our students and community learn about heart health. Some things we can do for optimal heart health include taking the stairs, parking further away from the door to get extra steps, packing a fresh and healthy lunch (something I’ve been doing a lot lately), drinking enough water and planning nutritious family meals. What will you do to keep your heart healthy?
Today my Senior Leadership Team and I will have a mid-year retreat where we’ll assess where we are as a system, tweaks we need to make, and begin planning for the 2024-25 school year.

El mensaje semanal de Matias
Quiero empezar el mensaje de esta semana agradeciendo al Austin ISD por todo el apoyo durante el año pasado. Me siento honrado de servir como superintendente en el distrito que conozco y amo con todo mi corazón. Vamos a hacer grandes cosas por los estudiantes y las familias de nuestra ciudad.
La semana pasada pude visitar la Primaria Davis, donde pasé por el salón de clase de la Srta. Nicole Crowe y vi a una maestra ejemplar en acción. Todos sus estudiantes estaban trabajando independientemente mientras ella trabajaba con un grupo de estudiantes. La Srta. Crowe no paró de enseñar y de interactuar con los estudiantes durante todo el tiempo que estuvimos en su clase. Cuando preguntaba a los estudiantes, ellos me contaban en qué estaban trabajando y aprendiendo. Fue un salón de clases increíble para estar y ver cómo ella estructuró un ambiente de aprendizaje donde los estudiantes estaban tan comprometidos e involucrados en su trabajo.
Otra cosa que he notado al caminar por las escuelas son todos nuestros hermosos murales y mosaicos. No hay una escuela que visite en la que no me sorprenda el bello arte creado por las comunidades: ¡una de las cualidades que hacen que Austin sea Austin! ¡Me encanta, y espero que a ustedes también!

Dónde estaré y con quién me reuniré
Lunes, 29 de enero
Comenzaré el día visitando nuestro Taller AVID/Gear Up para estudiantes de 12.° grado. Estoy emocionado de ver a estos estudiantes y ver cómo va su último año. Me dirigiré al centro de la ciudad para tener una reunión individual con Brandi Hosack, y luego tendremos nuestra junta semanal en la Cámara de Comercio de Austin. De allí, me dirigiré al Centro Holdsworth y me detendré en la Coalición para Reimaginar la Función Docente. Luego volveré a la ciudad para asistir a la Conferencia de mediados de Invierno de la TASA.
Martes, 30 de enero
Esta mañana me reuniré con el Dr. Steve Flores, actual superintendente interino del distrito escolar de Pflugerville. También voy a pasar algún tiempo hablando con Laura Huffman de la ciudad de Austin, que es una consultora en administración del cambio. Luego pasaré el resto del día asistiendo a la Conferencia de mediados de invierno de la Asociación de Administradores Escolares de Texas (TASA, por sus siglas en inglés). Este es un maravilloso evento anual donde los administradores de todo el estado se reúnen en Austin en enero para presentar prácticas prometedoras y aprendizajes clave en su distrito.
Miércoles, 31 de enero
Hoy asistiré al último día de Conferencia de mediados de invierno de la TASA y me reuniré con Jeff Conovan, superintendente del distrito escolar independiente de Dime Box, como parte del Programa de Certificación de Superintendentes de la Región XIII. Luego volveré a la oficina para reunirme con un socio de la comunidad. Tengo una junta de gobernanza en la tarde con nuestros representantes de la mesa directiva (presidente Singh, vicepresidente Foster, y secretaria de la mesa directiva Boswell). Terminaré el día reuniéndome con nuestra Asociación de Administradores de Escuelas Públicas de Austin.
Jueves, 1.º de febrero
¡Feliz febrero! Comenzaré mi día en la oficina con la Ceremonia de izado de la bandera Panafricana para dar comienzo a las celebraciones del Mes de la Historia Afroamericana en todo el distrito. El Mes de la Historia Afroamericana ofrece la oportunidad de profundizar en la historia negra y afroamericana. Cada escuela recibe recursos, y se anima a las escuelas a colaborar con los estudiantes y el personal para diseñar actividades del Mes de la Historia Afroamericana que involucren, eduquen e inspiren.
Después de las festividades de la mañana, me reuniré con Ashly Paz, nuestra asesora de gobernanza de Lone Star, y con el Dr. Ray Hart, director ejecutivo del Consejo de Escuelas de Grandes Ciudades. Me reuniré con ellos para planificar el desarrollo de nuestros nuevos objetivos y medidas de progreso. Luego me reuniré con Ken Zarifis, presidente de Education Austin. Por la tarde me reuniré con Zack Craddock de Third Future, nuestro socio 1882 en la Escuela Secundaria Méndez. Luego me reuniré con el síndico Lugo para nuestra reunión individual mensual y asistiré a la junta de nuestro Equipo de liderazgo ejecutivo. Terminaré el día de trabajo en el Centro Holdsworth para asistir a un retiro del liderazgo. Antes de regresar a casa, pasaré por mi antigua Escuela Secundaria Covington, ¡para ver la producción de Mean Girls de los Colts!
Viernes, 2 de febrero
"¡Bien, campistas! ¡Levántense y brillen!" ¡Es el Día de la Marmota! ¡También es el "Día de vestir de rojo" para apoyar la salud del corazón! Sin duda, hay muchas cosas sucediendo este mes.
Febrero es el Mes Americano del Corazón, y nuestros equipos Coordinados de salud escolar tienen muchas cosas sucediendo en nuestras escuelas para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes y a la comunidad a aprender sobre la salud del corazón. Algunas cosas que podemos hacer para tener una salud cardiaca óptima son subir las escaleras, estacionarse más lejos de la puerta para dar pasos adicionales, preparar un almuerzo fresco y saludable (algo que he estado haciendo mucho últimamente), beber suficiente agua y planificar comidas familiares nutritivas. ¿Qué vas a hacer tú para mantener sano tu corazón?
Hoy mi Equipo de liderazgo de alto rango y yo tendremos un retiro de mitad de año donde evaluaremos dónde estamos como sistema, los ajustes que necesitamos hacer y comenzaremos a planificar el ciclo escolar 2024-25.
