Board Names Matias Segura as Austin ISD Superintendent (En español)

Dear Austin ISD community,

At the January 25 voting meeting of the Austin ISD Board of Trustees, the board hired Matias Segura as the new Austin ISD Superintendent, approving his contract with a unanimous vote. This is an important moment for our district. After more than 18 months under the leadership of two different interim superintendents, including Mr. Segura, we are excited to have a committed and capable leader for the district and its people.

The Austin ISD School Board of Trustees appointed Matias Segura as the district’s superintendent at its regular board voting meeting Thursday.

Segura's deep roots in the Austin ISD community, as both a former student and the son of a longtime teacher, make him uniquely qualified to understand and address the needs of the district.

He attended Kocurek Elementary, Covington Middle School and graduated from James Bowie High School. His mother was a former teacher serving more than four decades at Austin ISD.

African American Heritage Celebration

Now in its 41st year, the African American Heritage Celebration began in 1983 under the leadership of former Austin ISD Associate Superintendent William Charles Akins. With a 2024 theme of “Illuminating African Americans and the Arts," this event showcases the academic achievements of our students, the dedication and leadership of our staff, and the commitment of our community partners. Austin ISD awards our Top Senior Scholars with a textbook scholarship for their college of choice, as well as prizes for winners of the essay and art contests.

Austin ISD Students Participate in "We Love Austin Music Week" (En español)

Austin ISD students are participating in “We Love Austin Music Week”, an initiative by the non-profit Texas Cultural Trust.  TCT is an advocate for arts in education. Several schools in the district are participating in the week-long event. WLAM provides an opportunity for students to get involved in music as an art form and celebrate Austin’s musical heritage and culture.
