Austin ISD will begin the naming process for the New Southwest Elementary School and the New Blazier Relief Campus in accordance with board policy. The naming process for the New Southwest Elementary School will engage both the Baranoff ES and Kiker ES communities. The New Blazier Relief Campus will engage with the Blazier community. Austin ISD staff in the Department of Communications and Community Engagement will facilitate the engagement process to work with the community to generate nominations to bring forward for vote by the Austin ISD Board of Trustees.
Both the New Southwest Elementary School and the New Blazier Relief Campus were approved as part of the 2017 Bond program. The campuses will be open August 2020 and have their first students for the 2020-21 school year. The boundaries for the Southwest Elementary School were approved at the November 18 Regular Board Meeting. New boundaries are not needed for the New Blazier Relief Campus as a grade level reassignment will be used to increase the grade level in the new building.
The New Southwest Elementary School will provide relief to the over-utilized Kiker and Baranoff Elementary Schools with a planned capacity of 522 students. This facility is one of the first schools to be designed and built in the 2017 Bond Program. Following the AISD vision of creating 21st-century learning spaces for students, the new elementary school will incorporate flexible spaces allowing for collaborative, interdisciplinary, and project-driven learning.
The New Blazier Relief Campus is one of the first schools to be designed and built in the 2017 Bond Program. This school is intended to provide immediate overcrowding relief for Blazier Elementary School by constructing a facility to accommodate grades 4 through 6. This new build will be Phase 1 of a strategic plan to transform the entire site into a village containing Pre-K through 8th grade facilities, while providing relief to Blazier Elementary School throughout the transition.
