Multilingual Education at Austin ISD

The Multilingual Education Team puts into action the Austin ISD belief that the linguistic and cultural richness of our students is a resource that should be recognized and developed.

Vision

Austin ISD schools will be inclusive communities that celebrate all languages and cultures, where exemplary multilingual instructional programs provide high-quality teaching and learning so that all students excel and graduate prepared for active engagement in a global, multicultural society.

Mission

The mission of Austin ISD Multilingual Education is to promote academic excellence by meeting the affective, linguistic, and cognitive needs of multilingual learners.

What We Do

The Multilingual Education Team champions dual language, world language and English as a Second Language opportunities for multilingual learners throughout the district. Our team works alongside other district departments to strengthen curriculum and instructional practices in the classroom. 

Our comprehensive support includes the Multilingual Education Team, the International Welcome Center and the Refugee Family Support Office.

About Our Students

Of the district's nearly 81,000 students, more than 21,000 are Emergent Bilingual. Nearly 15,000 are in our elementary schools, 3,600 are at our middle schools and almost 3,500 are in high school. More than 100 languages are spoken in schools throughout the district.
