Acronyms & Abbrieviations

Acronyms and Abbreviations

Generally, spell out the full name of an organization or program on first reference.

Remember, AISD serves students whose families speak more than 100 languages. It is always helpful to provide the full name on first reference—and to avoid acronyms that may be unfamiliar, remove or confuse meaning, or equate students with programs or services (e.g., ELLs or SpEds). Do not put an acronym in parentheses following a full name.

Commonly known abbreviations such as CNN or SAT can be used on all references in communications to audiences familiar with the acronyms.

In general, Austin ISD follows Associated Press style. Download a PDF of a brief introduction to AP and district writing style.
