Student Safety and Off-Campus Protest

Dear Austin ISD community,

Today, students at 14 campuses participated in student-led protests related to immigration enforcement activities. While many of our students participated in walk-out demonstrations on campus, some students left our schools and gathered at the Texas Capitol.

It is important to note that this event is not sponsored or endorsed by Austin ISD or any of our schools. In alignment with our practices, our campuses communicate with families if and when they learn about the possibility that students may participate.

Continuing conversations around academic visioning, boundary changes and consolidations (En español)

Dear Austin ISD community,

We are well into our transition work related to the school consolidations approved back in November, and it’s time to revisit our plan to move forward with boundary changes. This work is essential to ensure every student in Austin has access to an excellent neighborhood school.

TEA approves 22 of 24 Turnaround Plans, final two on track for approval (En español)

Dear Austin ISD community,

I’m pleased to share that we’ve heard back from TEA about the Turnaround Plans (TAPs) submitted in November 2025.

What TEA decided

TEA has approved 22 of our 24 Turnaround Plans (92%) without requiring any adjustments. For the remaining two plans, they’ve requested additional details before issuing final approval. This reinforces the confidence TEA has in the work Austin ISD is undertaking and is an important affirmation of the school improvement work already underway on our campuses.

Special Education Evaluation Progress (en español)

Austin ISD’s Special Education Department accomplished a major milestone as it was shared with the board that the district has zero overdue evaluations! That’s a significant turnaround from 1,588 late evaluations in 2022–23.

By the numbers: The district achieved 100% compliance with state performance indicators despite rising demand, with referrals peaking at 7,196 in 2024.

  • Improvements include shifting to an employment-based staffing model, proactive scheduling of evaluations, and automated tracking reports.

Austin ISD schools, offices closed Tuesday, Jan. 27

All Austin ISD schools and offices will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 27, due to persistent hazardous road conditions and campus conditions. All extracurricular activities and athletic events are also canceled.

The decision to close was made following close consultation with local weather, transportation and public works officials. While road conditions have improved in some areas, several critical factors influenced this safety-first approach:
