Matias's Weekly
It was a busy weekend in Austin ISD.
On Saturday our principals and many of our support staff in Teaching, Learning and Leading and the Office of Talent Strategy attended our Teacher Career Fair at the Palmer Event Center. It was a huge success and we hired 65 teachers on the spot and many candidates have interviews set up this week.
Back at the office our enrollment, early learning and community engagement teams held a registration event where families could stop by and get help with registration for PK – 12. Don’t forget to enroll your students for the 2024-25 school year soon. We hire teachers based on enrollment and we want to ensure our campuses are properly staffed.

Scorecard Development
Over the past several months, you may have heard me talk about developing a new scorecard. The scorecard is used to evaluate the district’s progress toward goals set by the board. Our new scorecard can have up to five goals and five constraints. Goals 1–3 are defined by HB3 requirements, and then our board can develop up to two additional goals. Constraints are based on community values and can be defined as – what the superintendent must align to in pursuit of our goals. The Board of Trustees defines the goals and constraints.
The Administration, led by the superintendent, then develops progress measures. Progress measures help us monitor progress toward meeting the goals and constraints. We have opportunities to explore progress measures that are aligned with our values and also position us well for years.
Our initiatives will be refined around the Scorecard to ensure total alignment within AISD. As always, we’ll provide our updates to our trustees through monitoring reports and always provide disaggregated information so we understand and support our historically marginalized student groups.
I believe it’s important for our community to understand the Scorecard and how it contributes to the overall success of Austin ISD, your school and your student(s). We will develop a Scorecard that is both ambitious and attainable — and we will measure our progress along the way.

Where I’ll be and who I’ll meet
Monday, April 15
By this point, most folks know that I meet with my Senior Leadership team on Monday morning. This morning, we’ll discuss our work on the SY 2024-25 Budget. Our team has worked tirelessly to identify a path forward with minimal impact on campuses. I’ll discuss the State of Black Education with other Central Texas Superintendents in the middle of the day. My afternoon is dedicated to working through items on my to-do list because sometimes you just have to set aside time to get things done.
Tuesday, April 16
This morning I’ll start my day meeting with former Trustee Doyle Valdez. Mr. Valdez continues to be a great partner and supporter for Austin ISD and we are so thankful for his dedication. After that, I’ll meet with Trustee Zapata for our 1:1, followed by a 1:1 with President Singh. Then, I’ll attend a roundtable with some of our generous donors. I’ll head back to the office to receive a 2022 Bond Program update. I’ll then attend a meeting with the Tri-Agency Workforce Initiative, where we’ll discuss the CHIPS Act and converse with the Austin Regional Manufacturers Association.
Wednesday, April 17
I’ll start today meeting with the APIE Board Members and then meet with Trustee Whitley-Chu. I’ll have a Governance Meeting with the board officers where we’ll plan for upcoming board meetings. Then, I’ll meet with our CTO, Oscar Rodriguez. In the afternoon we’ll prepare for tonight’s special board meeting where we’ll discuss our new Scorecard Goals and Constraints. Tonight, we will focus primarily on setting constraints. In attendance tonight, we’ll have a special guest, Dr. Ray Hart from the Council of Great City Schools, who will share the Comprehensive Needs Assessment data collected for us as part of rewriting our Scorecard.
Thursday, April 18
I’m meeting with my team this morning to discuss Parent Support Specialist (PSS) funding. Our PSSes are the absolute best and do so much for our campuses, and we are so grateful to have such a dynamic group supporting our students and families. Then I’ll have a work session with my team to discuss the Austin Area Alliance of Black School Educators or AABSE. In the afternoon, I have some time blocked off for strategic planning. I’ll use the time to continue planning our upcoming initiatives and milestones. In the evening I’ll attend part two of our board meeting to work on our Scorecard, where we’ll spend most of our time working on our goals.
Friday, April 19
On Friday morning I’ll join my colleagues from the Texas Urban Council to learn together, and I’ve also set aside some time for planning and prep. This afternoon is full of fun and celebrations. I’ll first head to the Eid-al-Fitr Celebration at Travis Heights Elementary School, then head to the PAC for the Latino Academic Achievement Awards! It’s close to the end of the year, so you’ll hear more and more about many celebrations for our students and community – and this is what it is all about!

El mensaje semanal de Matias
Ha sido un fin de semana muy ocupado en el Austin ISD.
El sábado, nuestros directores y gran parte de nuestropersonal de apoyo de Enseñanza, Aprendizaje y Liderazgo y de la Oficina deEstrategia para el Talento asistieron a nuestra Feria de Trabajo para Maestrosen el Centro de Eventos Palmer. Fue un gran éxito y contratamos a 65 maestrosen el momento, y muchos candidatos tienen entrevistas programadas para estasemana.
En las oficinas centrales, nuestros equipos deMatriculación, Aprendizaje temprano y Participación Comunitaria llevaron a caboun evento de matriculación donde las familias podían pasar y obtener ayuda conla inscripción para los grados de prekínder a 12. No se olviden de matricularpronto a sus hijos para el ciclo escolar 2024-25. La contratación de maestrosse hace en base a la cantidad de matriculación de estudiantes y queremos asegurarnosde que nuestras escuelas cuenten con el personal adecuado.

Elaboración de la Tarjeade resultados
En los últimos meses me habrán oído hablar de laelaboración de una nueva tarjeta de resultados. La tarjeta de resultados seutiliza para evaluar el progreso del distrito hacia las metas fijadas por lamesa directiva. Nuestra nueva tarjeta de resultados puede tener hasta cincometas y cinco limitaciones. Las metas 1-3 están definidas por los requisitos dela ley HB3 (link), y luego nuestra mesa directiva puede elaborar hasta dosmetas adicionales. La mesa directivadefine las metas y las limitaciones.
Luego, la Administración, bajo la dirección delsuperintendente, elabora las medidas de progreso. Las medidas de progreso nosayudan a supervisar los avances hacia el cumplimiento de las metas ylimitaciones. Tenemos oportunidades para explorar las medidas de progreso queestán alineadas con nuestros valores y también nos situarán en una buenaposición a lo largo de los años.
Nuestras iniciativas se perfeccionarán en torno a latarjeta de resultados para garantizar una alineación total dentro del AISD.Como siempre, proporcionaremos nuestras actualizaciones a nuestros miembros dela mesa directiva a través de informes de monitoreo y siempre proporcionaremosinformación desglosada para que entendamos y apoyemos a nuestros grupos deestudiantes históricamente marginados.
Creo que es importante que nuestra comunidad entienda laTarjeta de Resultados y cómo esta contribuye al éxito general del Austin ISD,de su escuela y de su(s) hijo(s). Elaboraremos una Tarjeta de Resultados quesea a la vez ambiciosa y alcanzable - y mediremos nuestro progreso a lo largodel camino.

Dónde estaré y con quién me reuniré
Lunes, 15 de abril
A estas alturas, la mayoría de la gente sabe que me reúno con mi equipo de liderazgo de alto rango el lunes por la mañana. Esta mañana, comentaremos nuestro trabajo sobre el presupuesto del ciclo escolar 2024-25. Nuestro equipo ha trabajado incansablemente para identificar el camino a seguir con un impacto mínimo en las escuelas. Voy a participar en una discusión sobre el Estado de la Educación de estudiantes de Raza negra con otros Superintendentes del Centro de Texas en la mitad del día. Mi tarde está dedicada a trabajar en mi lista de cosas por hacer, porque a veces es necesario reservar tiempo para hacer las cosas.
Martes, 16 de abril
Esta mañana comenzaré mi día reuniéndome con el ex miembro de la mesa directiva Doyle Valdez. El Sr. Valdez sigue siendo un gran socio y partidario del Austin ISD y estamos muy agradecidos por su dedicación. Después de eso, me reuniré con la miembro de la mesa directiva, Zapata para nuestra reunión individual, y luego una reunión individual con la presidenta Singh. Volveré a la oficina para recibir información actualizada sobre el Programa de Bonos 2022. Después asistiré a una reunión con la organización Tri-Agency Workforce Initiative, donde comentaremos la Ley CHIPS y conversaré con la agrupación Austin Regional Manufacturers Association.
Miércoles, 17 de abril

Luego, me reuniré con nuestro director técnico en jefe, Óscar Rodríguez. Por la tarde, me prepararé para la reunión especial de la mesa directiva esta noche en la que comentaremos nuestros nuevas metas y limitaciones de la tabla de resultados. Esta noche contaremos con la presencia de un invitado especial, el Dr. Ray Hart, del Consejo de Escuelas de Ciudades Grandes, que compartirá los datos de la Evaluación de Necesidades Comprensivas que han recopilado para nosotros como parte de la nuestra elaboración de la Tarjeta de resultados.
Jueves, 18 de abril
Esta mañana me reúno con mi equipo para comentar la financiación de los especialistas de apoyo a los padres de familia (PSS, por sus siglas en inglés). Nuestros PSS son los mejores y hacen mucho por nuestras escuelas, y estamos muy agradecidos de tener un grupo tan dinámico de apoyo a nuestros estudiantes y familias. Luego tendré una sesión de trabajo con mi equipo para comentar acerca de la organización Austin Area Aliance of Black School Educators o AABSE, por sus siglas en inglés. Por la tarde, tengo algo de tiempo bloqueado para la planificación estratégica. Aprovecharé el tiempo para seguir planificando las próximas iniciativas e indicadores. Por la noche asistiré a la segunda parte de nuestra reunión de la mesa directiva para trabajar en nuestra tabla de resultados, donde pasaremos la mayor parte del tiempo trabajando en nuestras metas.
Viernes, 19 de abril
El viernes por la mañana me reuniré con mis colegas del Consejo Urbano de Texas para aprender juntos, y también he reservado algo de tiempo para la planificación y los preparativos de esta reunión. Esta tarde está llena de diversión y celebraciones. Primero iré a la Celebración de Eid-al-Fitr en la Escuela Primaria Travis Heights, luego iré al Centro de Artes Escénicas para los Premios Latinos de Aprovechamiento Académico. Se acerca el fin de año, así que escucharán más y más sobre muchas celebraciones para nuestros estudiantes y la comunidad - ¡y de eso se trata!
