Total Eclipse (of the Heart) in Austin!
It’s go time, and it looks like the rain might hold off, and we’ll get to experience the rare phenomenon of a total solar eclipse. Make sure you read all about this experience and see all that we’ve done to prepare our students and staff.

Start of STAAR!
This week starts STAAR testing for our 3rd–8th-grade students. While this can feel stressful for students and families, we want to frame this as a day when students get to show what they know — and there are many ways to demonstrate learning and creative thinking. While testing is part of the education system, we recognize that this is just one of many ways to show what was learned and achieved this past school year. When I am out on campuses, I see so many projects and displays of student learning and when I meet with students, I am always inspired by their creativity and critical thinking skills. So encourage students to do their best, and remember this isn’t the only way to show what you’ve learned.

Where I’ll be and who I’ll meet
Monday, April 8 - Solar Eclipse Day!
The week begins with an early meeting with the Texas Urban Council before I head into the office to meet with my senior leadership team to debrief last week and plan for the upcoming week. Then, I’ll have a one-on-one meeting with Dr. Jacob Reach.
By then, it will be 1 p.m. so I’ll head outside and put on my eclipse-viewing glasses! Let’s hope the clouds part so we can get a great view.
After the eclipse ends, I’ll head back inside so that I can have my one-on-one meetings with Chief Brandi Hosack of our Office of Talent Strategy Office and Dr. Stephanie Hawley of our Office of Organizational Transformation. I’ll also meet with Michelle Wallis of our Office of Innovation and the Ed Fund. I’ll end the day meeting with the Austin Council of PTAs.
Tuesday, April 9
Today starts with our Salute Sponsor Breakfast. Salute is Austin ISD's annual celebration to recognize some of our district's outstanding team members for their dedication to student excellence and achievement in our schools. When I’m done there I’ll stop by a few campuses before I head to a lunch meeting with Education Austin President Ken Zarifis. From there, I’ll head to City Hall, where I’ll have meetings with outgoing Interim City Manager Jesus Garza, then a meeting with CM José Velásquez, followed by a meeting with Mayor Pro Tem Leslie Pool. After my time at City Hall, I’m excited to head over to Govalle Elementary School for their staff meeting before heading to an Education Austin Town Hall Meeting. Whew — it’s going to be a busy day!
Wednesday, April 10
Today is a student holiday in observance of Eid-al-Fitr, but our staff will still be hard at work. My morning will be spent in strategic planning sessions so that we can make sure we wrap up this school year strong and start next year even stronger. Then, I’ll meet with our General Counsel, Mr. Kenneth Walker.
I’ll end the day traveling to Philadelphia to attend the AERA Conference. As we work to strengthen our system, develop a new scorecard and plan strategically for the future, I want to ensure I have the latest information and research on what is working (and not working) across the educational system. This is a great opportunity to learn about promising practices in other large urban districts and see how we can replicate great ideas in the Austin context.

¡Eclipse total (del corazón) en Austin!
¡Llegó la hora y parece que la lluvia podría detenerse, y podremos experimentar el raro fenómeno de un eclipse solar total! Asegúrense de leer todo sobre esta experiencia y ver todo lo que hemos hecho para preparar a nuestros estudiantes y personal.

¡Inicio de las STAAR!
Esta semana empiezan las pruebas STAAR para nuestros estudiantes de 3.o a 8.o grado. Aunque esto se pueda sentir estresante para los estudiantes y las familias, queremos presentar esto como un día en el que los estudiantes pueden mostrar lo que saben y hay muchas maneras de demostrar el aprendizaje y el pensamiento creativo. Si bien las pruebas son parte del sistema educativo, reconocemos que esta es solo una de las muchas maneras de mostrar lo que se aprendió y se logró el año escolar pasado. Cuando estoy en las escuelas, veo tantos proyectos y demostraciones del aprendizaje del estudiante y cuando me reúno con estudiantes, siempre me inspira su creatividad y destrezas de pensamiento crítico. Así que animen a los estudiantes para que hagan lo mejor posible y recuerden que esta no es la única manera de mostrar lo que han aprendido.

Dónde estaré y con quién me reuniré
Lunes, 8 de abril - ¡Día del Eclipse Solar!
La semana empieza con una junta temprano con el Consejo Urbano de Texas antes de ir a mi oficina para reunirme con mi equipo de liderazgo de alto rango para el informe de la semana pasada y planificar para la próxima semana. Después, tendré una junta individualmente con el Dr. Jacob Reach.
Para entonces, será la 1 p.m., ¡así que saldré y me pondré mis lentes para ver el eclipse! Esperemos que las nubes se abran para que podamos tener una gran vista.
Después de que pase el eclipse, volveré adentro para poder tener mis juntas individuales con la jefa de nuestra Oficina de Estrategia para el Talento, Brandi Hosack y con la Dra. Stephanie Hawley de nuestra Oficina de Transformación Organizacional. También me reuniré con Michelle Wallis de nuestra Oficina de Innovación y el Ed Fund. Terminaré el día en una junta con el Consejo de las Asociaciones de Padres y Maestros (PTA, por sus siglas en inglés) de Austin.
Martes, 9 de abril
Hoy comienza con nuestro Desayuno de Patrocinadores de Salute. Salute es una celebración anual del Austin ISD para reconocer a algunos miembros sobresalientes del equipo del distrito por su continua dedicación a la excelencia y el desempeño estudiantil en nuestras escuelas. Cuando termine eso, pararé en algunas escuelas antes de ir a mi junta con almuerzo con el presidente de Education Austin, Ken Zarifis. De allí me dirigiré al Ayuntamiento, donde tendré juntas con el saliente gestor municipal interino, Jesús Garza, después a una junta con el miembro del concejo José Velásquez, seguido de una junta con el alcalde Pro Tem Leslie Pool. Después de mi tiempo en el Ayuntamiento, me emociona ir a la Escuela Primaria Govalle a su junta con el personal, antes de dirigirme a una junta de foro abierto con Education Austin. ¡Será un día muy ocupado!
Miércoles, 10 de abril
Hoy es un día feriado para los estudiantes para celebrar el Fin del Ayuno, pero nuestro personal todavía trabajará duro. Pasaré la mañana en sesiones de planificación estratégica para que podamos asegurarnos de cerrar este ciclo escolar de forma sólida y comenzar el próximo año aún más. Después, me reuniré con nuestro asesor legal general, el Sr. Kenneth Walker. Concluiré el día viajando a Filadelfia para asistir a la Conferencia AERA. Mientras trabajamos para fortalecer nuestro sistema, desarrollar una nueva tarjeta de resultados y planificar estratégicamente para el futuro, quiero asegurarme de que tengo la información más reciente e investigar sobre lo que está funcionando (y lo que no) en el sistema educativo. Esta es una excelente oportunidad para conocer sobre las prácticas prometedoras en otros distritos urbanos grandes y ver cómo podemos replicar excelentes ideas en el contexto de Austin.

Hoy, tendremos nuestra Feria Anual del Trabajo para Maestros para el ciclo escolar 2024-25, y ¡queremos que se unan a nuestro equipo! Estamos emocionados por conocer maestros dedicados que estén listos para llamar al Austin ISD su hogar y comiencen a dar forma a las mentes y futuros de nuestros estudiantes todos los días.
