Welcome back to the second semester of the 2023-24 School Year! It’s going to be great!

A year ago this week, we started “Matias’s Week Ahead” as a happy accident! I was starting as the Interim Superintendent, and we hoped to share with Austin ISD staff where I’d be and who I’d be seeing in an effort to increase transparency across the organization, but instead, we accidentally shared it with all of Austin ISD. To our surprise, we received lots of positive feedback, so we kept going.

The point of this weekly communication remains transparency — so everyone knows what the superintendent is doing and who I am meeting with to help make Austin ISD the best it can be. We try to share helpful information and highlight key partners and community groups that help make our system and city successful. I firmly believe it takes all of us to work together to make our schools and city great! #StrongSchoolsStongerAustin

Where I’ll be and who I’ll meet

Monday, January 8
While today is the last day of break for students, today is our first day back at the office. I’ll start my day with a 1:1 with our CTO, Oscar Rodriguez. I’ll then join my Senior Leadership team for our standing meeting. In the afternoon, I’ll have a 1:1 with Brandi Hosack, Chief of Talent Strategy. My day will wrap up with a 1:1 meeting with Board President Singh and a 1:1 with Trustee Hunter. I’ll spend the afternoon and evening preparing for our board meeting later this week.

Tuesday, January 9
I’ll welcome students back to school this morning by visiting a few campuses. I’ll then head back to the office to meet with Opportunity Austin to discuss our continued partnership. Later in the day, I’ll meet with Dr. Allen Weeks from Austin Voices. I’ll meet with our Deputy Superintendent, Ms. Paty Rodriguez in the afternoon and end the day meeting with ACPTA.

Wednesday, January 10
I’ll start my day meeting with Trustee Whitley-Chu. I then have a lunch meeting with Ken Zarifis from Education Austin where we will discuss various strategies and initiatives to better support our staff. In the afternoon, I’ll head back to the office for a 1:1 meeting with our General Counsel, Kenneth Walker, and then our Chief of Operations, Christine Steenport. I’ll wrap my day up with a 1:1 with Dr. Stephanie Hawley, Chief of Organizational Transformation.

Thursday, January 11
In the morning, I’ll attend a meeting with the Public Consulting Group, the parent company of Ed Plan and EasyIEP, our Special Education Software. At lunch I’ll meet with Trustee Zapata for a meeting about our Summer Youth Employment Program with Travis County. The afternoon is dedicated to preparing for the Board Information Meeting, where I will be presenting on Scorecard Constraint Progress Measures 3.1 and 3.2. Our new scorecard has three goals and three constraints. Constraint 3 states, "we will not allow the number of past due special education evaluations to increase or remain the same.” We will continually monitor this constraint with Constraint Progress Measure 3.1 stating, “the total number of initial and reevaluations conducted will decrease from 4767 in December 2022 to 0 in December 2024. Constraint Progress Measure 3.2 states, “the number of pending evaluations will decrease from 4767 in December 2022 to 0 in December 2025. We’ll also have a presentation about where we are with the TEA Agreed Order. We are excited about the progress we’ve made and are continuing to monitor and adjust as needed so that we can provide the best services to our students and families.

Friday, January 12
I’ll begin my day reviewing some things for the upcoming week. I will then attend the Joint Subcommittee Meeting. The Joint Subcommittee is a partnership between the City of Austin, Travis County and Austin ISD. President Singh, Trustee Zapata and Trustee Lugo all sit on the committee and help the three entities align our work to make sure our students have great experiences in our schools, the city and county. In the afternoon, I’ll meet with our team to discuss Employee Recognition events for the Spring of 2024 as well as plan for the summer Leadership Institute. I’ll end the day having a 1:1 with Dr. Jacob Reach, Chief Officer of Governmental Relations and Board Services.

¡Bienvenidos al segundo semestre del ciclo escolar 2023-24! ¡Va a ser grandioso!

¡Hace un año esta semana, empezamos " La semana de Matías" como un accidente afortunado! Yo estaba iniciando como superintendente interino, y esperábamos compartir con el personal del Austin ISD dónde estaría y a quién vería en un esfuerzo por aumentar la transparencia en toda la organización, pero en cambio, accidentalmente lo compartimos con todo el Austin ISD. Para nuestra sorpresa, recibimos muchos comentarios positivos, así que seguimos adelante.

El objetivo de esta comunicación semanal sigue siendo la transparencia - para que todos sepan lo que el superintendente está haciendo y con quién me estoy reuniendo para ayudar a que el Austin ISD sea lo mejor que puede ser. Tratamos de compartir información útil y destacar a los principales socios y grupos comunitarios que contribuyen al éxito de nuestro sistema y de nuestra ciudad. ¡Creo firmemente que se necesita que todos trabajemos juntos para hacer que nuestras escuelas y nuestra ciudad sean grandiosas! #EscuelasFuertesparaunAustin másFuerte

Dónde estaré y con quién me reuniré

Lunes, 8 de enero
Mientras que hoy es el último día de vacaciones para los estudiantes, hoy es nuestro primer día de vuelta a la oficina. Empezaré el día con una reunión individual con nuestro director de tecnología, Óscar Rodríguez. A continuación, me reuniré con mi equipo de liderazgo de alto rango para celebrar nuestra junta habitual. Por la tarde, tendré una reunión individual con Brandi Hosack, jefa de Estrategia para el Talento. El día terminará con una reunión individual con la presidenta de la mesa directiva Singh, y otra reunión individual con la miembro de la mesa directiva Hunter. Pasaré la tarde y la noche preparando la reunión de la mesa directiva de esta semana.

Esta mañana daré la bienvenida de regreso a la escuela a los estudiantes visitando algunos planteles escolares. A continuación, volveré a la oficina para reunirme con Opportunity Austin y hablar de la continuidad de nuestra colaboración. Más tarde, me reuniré con el Dr. Allen Weeks de Austin Voices. Jueves, 11 de enero
Por la mañana, asistiré a una reunión con el Grupo de Consultoría Pública, la empresa matriz de Ed Plan y EasyIEP, nuestro software de Educación Especial. En el almuerzo me reuniré con la miembro de la mesa directiva Zapata para una reunión sobre nuestro Programa de Empleo Juvenil de Verano con la Ciudad de Austin / Condado de Travis. La tarde está dedicada a la preparación para la Reunión de información de la Mesa Directiva, donde estaré presentando sobre las Medidas de Progreso 3.1 y 3.2 de Restricción de la tarjeta de resultados. Nuestra nueva tarjeta de resultados tiene tres objetivos y tres restricciones. La restricción 3 establece que "no permitiremos que el número de evaluaciones de educación especial vencidas aumente o permanezca igual". Monitorearemos continuamente esta restricción con la Medida de Progreso 3.1 que establece que "el número total de evaluaciones iniciales y reevaluaciones realizadas disminuirá de 4767 en diciembre de 2022 a 0 en diciembre de 2024". La Medida de Progreso de Contraste 3.2 establece que "el número de evaluaciones pendientes disminuirá de 4767 en diciembre de 2022 a 0 en diciembre de 2025". También tendremos una presentación sobre dónde estamos con la Orden Acordada de la TEA. Estamos entusiasmados con el progreso que hemos hecho y seguimos monitoreando y ajustando según sea necesario para que podamos ofrecer los mejores servicios a nuestros estudiantes y familias.

Viernes, 12 de enero
Comenzaré el día repasando algunas cosas para la semana que viene. Luego asistiré a la reunión del Subcomité Conjunto. El Subcomité Conjunto es una asociación entre la Ciudad de Austin, el Condado de Travis y el Austin ISD. La presidenta Singh, los miembros de la mesa directiva Zapata y Lugo forman parte del comité y ayudan a las tres entidades a alinear nuestro trabajo para asegurar que nuestros estudiantes tengan excelentes experiencias en nuestras escuelas, la ciudad y el condado. Por la tarde, me reuniré con nuestro equipo para discutir los eventos de Reconocimiento de Empleados para la primavera de 2024, así como planificar el Instituto de Liderazgo de verano. Terminaré el día teniendo una reunión individual con el Dr. Jacob Reach, jefe de Relaciones Gubernamentales y Servicios de la Mesa Directiva.
