“School Social Workers are the link between the home, school and community in providing direct as well as indirect services to students, families and school personnel to promote and support students' academic and social success,” -- this is how the School Social Work Association of America defines this profession.
An essential profession for schools…with this in mind the nonprofit organization, CapCityKids, is funding the School of Social Work Internship program.
- This program in partnership with the University of Texas School of Social Work Social Services came together to be able to provide direct counseling and social services to Austin ISD students by placing UT Graduate students at different campuses.
And this year Austin ISD is celebrating 15 years of receiving this grant.
This grant funds a full-time position that is dedicated to supervising the school social interns.
What they are saying: “This program is amazing is one of its kind,” Sarah McCafferty said. McCafferty is the Program Coordinator for Social Work Support Services at Austin ISD. I love it, I really do; I feel very fortunate to work with our graduate students…they are so excited about doing the work and the students are excited to be with them.”
How it works: Under this program, 8-10 UT graduate social work students are selected to intern at Austin ISD schools. Depending on their graduation date, they dedicate either part-time or full-time hours to support the schools.
McCafferty, overseeing this partnership since 2019, witnesses firsthand the positive impact these interns make, forging meaningful relationships with students and families while providing crucial support.
McCafferty emphasizes the profound impact of the initiative, noting, “Our students feel seen, they feel heard, they feel supported.”

- CapCityKids has contributed over $1.7 million to Austin ISD.
- A total of 148 UT interns have benefited from the program.
- The program has directly served more than 10,000 Austin ISD students.
