Matias's Weekly
Last week was quite eventful! We launched our new online enrollment system—EnrollAustin, which makes it easier for our families to find the right school for their kids, apply to programs and register for the 2024-25 school year. We are so thankful to our team for the 2 years of hard work it took to launch our new streamlined system.
On Friday, I had the honor of visiting Dobie Middle School and spending time with Ms. Roxanne Walker. While there, I visited first-year teacher Ms. Tatiana Brown-Gomez’s classroom and was blown away by her interactions with students. Teachers like Ms. Brown-Gomez make a difference in our students' lives, which is another reason to be thankful.
Lastly, I want to take a moment to share how thankful we should all be for our amazing Food Service team and their fearless leader, Ryan Mikolaycik. Thanksgiving lunches at schools are a huge lift and one of our cafeterias' busiest days of the year. Ryan and his team of 580 Food Service employees support every campus as they serve Thanksgiving Lunch! On these days we welcome students and family guests—because it takes all of us to make our schools great.
As we head into the fall break, I want to encourage everyone to take time to rest and relax; take a moment to find one thing to be thankful for each day. Our students and our staff have worked so hard these past 14 weeks, and I am so thankful for that.

Where I’ll be and who I’ll meet
Monday, November 13
Today my executive leadership team and I will spend our 3rd and final day in a tremendous learning series we started earlier this fall: Leading for Equitable Outcomes. We’ve engaged in robust conversations about our own experiences in education and how we can support our entire system.
In the evening, I’ll be at Mendez Middle School with Trustee Zapata to prepare for our upcoming community partnership meeting to support our students with greater access to learning opportunities aligned to their interests.
Tuesday, November 14
I’ll start my day at Palm Elementary with Trustee Zapata’s Monthly Lead with Love series. This is a great monthly event where we learn about what is happening in District 2 and how we can best support our community. I’ll then head to the State of Talent & Education with the Austin Chamber of Commerce. In the afternoon, I’ll meet with Trustee Boswell, and after that, I’ll meet with President Singh and our Lone Star Governance Coach, Ms. Ashley Paz. In the evening, I’ll attend the District Advisory Council and then head to the 63rd Annual Preservation Merit Awards Celebration, where we’ll honor the legacy of L.C. Anderson.
Wednesday, November 15
Today begins at the Austin ISD Family Academy, a conference created to celebrate family involvement and volunteerism at Title I schools. I’ll then meet with Dr. Stephanie Hawley and Kamilah Wilson, from WestEd, about our Equity Assessment. Next, I’ll have my one-on-one meetings with Trustee Whitley-Chu and Trustee Kauffman. In the afternoon, I’ll meet with the Coalition for Special Education Equity and in the evening, I’ll attend the Andy Roddick Foundation Celebration. We thank the Andy Roddick Foundation for supporting our Austin ISD students.
Thursday, November 16
Today is one of the days I’ve most looked forward to as the Interim Superintendent: Travis ECHS Tamalada! This fantastic event is an Austin ISD tradition that celebrates our culture, city and what makes us uniquely Austin. In the afternoon, I’ll attend the Special Education Quality Assurance Meeting. The remainder of the afternoon will be spent preparing for the Board Voting Meeting.
Friday, November 17
This morning I’ll meet with our auditors, Gibson Consulting Group. This year, we are auditing our payroll and benefits department. I’ll then receive a Bond Program Update. The rest of the day will be spent preparing for the week we return from break.

El mensaje semanal de Matias
¡La semana pasada fue de intensa actividad! Lanzamos nuestro nuevo sistema de matriculación en línea—EnrollAustin, que les facilita a nuestras familias encontrar la escuela correcta para sus hijos, solicitar ingreso a programas e inscribirse para el ciclo escolar 2024-25. Estamos tan agradecidos con nuestro equipo por los 2 años de intenso trabajo que se realizó para lanzar nuestro nuevo sistema optimizado.
El viernes, tuve el honor de visitar la Escuela Secundaria Dobie y pasar tiempo con la Srta. Roxanne Walker. Mientras estaba ahí, visité el salón de clases de la maestra, Srta. Tatiana Brown-Gómez, que está en su primer año como maestra y quedé impresionado de su interacción con los estudiantes. Maestras como la Srta. Brown-Gómez marcan una diferencia en las vidas de nuestros estudiantes, lo cual es otra razón para estar agradecidos.
Por último, quiero tomarme un momento para compartir cuán agradecidos deberíamos de estar con nuestro sorprendente equipo de Servicios Alimentarios y su audaz líder, Ryan Mikolaycik. Los almuerzos de Acción de Gracias en las escuelas son algo muy relevante y uno de los días más ocupados del año en nuestras cafeterías. ¡Ryan y su equipo de 580 empleados de Servicios Alimentarios apoyan a cada escuela sirviendo el Almuerzo de Acción de Gracias! En estos días les damos la bienvenida a los estudiantes y sus familiares invitados, porque todos somos necesarios para hacer a nuestras escuelas excelentes.
Mientras nos dirigimos hacia las vacaciones de otoño, quiero animar a todos a que tomen tiempo para descansar y relajarse; tómense un momento para encontrar algo por qué estar agradecidos cada día. Nuestros estudiantes y nuestro personal han trabajado tan duro las 14 semanas pasadas y estoy tan agradecido por eso.

Dónde estaré y con quién me reuniré
Lunes, 13 de noviembre
Hoy, mi Equipo de Liderazgo Ejecutivo y yo pasaremos nuestro 3.er y último día en una tremenda serie que comenzamos a principios de este otoño: Liderando para obtener resultados equitativos. Nos hemos involucrado en intensas conversaciones sobre nuestras propias experiencias en educación y cómo podemos apoyar a todo nuestro sistema.
En la tarde, estaré en la Escuela Secundaria Méndez con la miembro de la mesa directiva, Zapata, para prepararnos para nuestra próxima junta de colaboración comunitaria para apoyar a nuestros estudiantes, con un mayor acceso a las oportunidades de aprendizaje alineadas con sus intereses.
Martes, 14 de noviembre
Comenzaré mi día en la Primaria Palm con la miembro de la mesa directiva, Zapata, en su serie mensual Lidere con amor. Este es un excelente evento mensual donde aprendemos sobre lo que está sucediendo en el distrito 2 y cómo podemos apoyar mejor a nuestra comunidad. Después me dirigiré a Estado de Talento y Educación con la Cámara de Comercio de Austin. En la tarde, me reuniré con la miembro de la mesa directiva, Boswell, y después me reuniré con la presidenta Singh y nuestra instructora de gobernanza de Lone Star, Srta. Ashley Paz. En la tarde, asistiré al Consejo Consultivo del Distrito y después me dirigiré a la 63.a Celebración para los Premios al Mérito de Preservación anual, donde rendimos homenaje al legado de L.C. Anderson.
Miércoles, 15 de noviembre
El día de hoy el Austin ISD celebra el voluntariado y la participación de las familias en la educación de sus hijos con una conferencia para las familias de las escuelas llamadas Title 1—son escuelas que apoyan a familias de bajos recursos. Me reuniré con la Dra. Stephanie Hawley y con Kamilah Wilson, de WestEd, para hablar sobre la Evaluación de la equidad. En seguida, tendré juntas individuales con los miembros de la mesa directiva Whitley-Chu y con Kauffman. En la tarde me reuniré con la Coalición por la Equidad en Educación Especial y en la tarde asistiré a la celebración de la Fundación Andy Roddick. Agradecemos a la Fundación Andy Roddick por apoyar a nuestros estudiantes del Austin ISD.
Jueves, 16 de noviembre
Hoy es uno de los días más esperados como superintendente interino: ¡la Tamalada de la Preparatoria Travis! Este fantástico evento es una tradición con la que el Austin ISD celebra nuestra cultura, ciudad y que hace ser a Austin, único. En la tarde, asistiré a la junta de Garantía de Calidad de Educación Especial. Lo que quede de la tarde se utilizará para la preparación de la junta de votación de la mesa directiva.
Viernes, 17 de noviembre
Esta mañana me reuniré con nuestros auditores, Gibson Consulting Group. Este año, estamos auditando a nuestro departamento de nómina y beneficios. Después recibiré una actualización sobre el programa del bono. El resto del día lo usaré en prepararme para la semana que regresamos de vacaciones.
