Board Approves Human Sexuality and Responsibility Scope and Sequence

The Austin ISD Board of Trustees approved the revised Human Sexuality and Responsibility scope and sequence at its February 25 meeting. The scope and sequence contains the topics that will be taught and the grade level at which those topics will be taught. AISD will post the scope and sequence on the AISD health webpage within the next week.

Administration will return to the board to seek approval of the full, revised curriculum that will include materials and lessons.

Bailey Middle School Competes at Google Headquarters in California

Earlier this year, the Bailey Middle School Robotics Team won the three most prestigious VEX awards possible. They won Tournament Champions, 1st in Robot Skills, and the Excellence Award! The Excellence Award is the highest award presented in the VEX Robotics programs.

The recipient of this award is the team that exemplifies overall excellence, and is a shining example of dedication, devotion, hard work, and teamwork. This recent win qualified the Bailey Robotics Team for a Tournament of Champions at Google Headquarters in California on Feb. 17.

The Austin ISD Board of Trustees is committed to seeing that all our students are nurtured in 21st-century learning spaces with high caliber educational offerings focused on student performance and well-being.  

During the coming months, the Board of Trustees will continue to work with the Superintendent to ensure we invest in our most important assets, our student’s and their success.  

Ann Richards School for Young Women Breaks Ground on Modernization Project

Austin ISD broke ground Feb. 22 on the $70 million voter-approved 2017 bond project for The Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders in South Austin. This project is the first phase of a strategic modernization plan to create a state-of-the-art campus at the current site.

Once complete the new facility will serve more than 1,000 students, enhancing academic programming including Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, also known as STEM. The project will also include new athletic fields and additional parking and a technology upgrades.

Board Approves Renaming of Reagan to Northeast Early College High School

The Austin ISD Board of Trustees at its Feb. 25 regular meeting approved the renaming of John H. Reagan Early College High School to Northeast Early College High School. The renaming will go into effect for the 2019–20 school year.

The board voted to rename the campus after more than a year of discussion and community engagement surrounding campus names that had ties to the Confederacy. The facility joins Lee Elementary School, Sarah Beth Lively Middle School and Anita Ferrales Coy Facility as the fourth AISD facility connected to the Confederacy to be renamed.

The Anti-Defamation League's No Place for Hate campaign was developed to organize schools to work together and develop projects that enhance appreciation of the lived experiences of all and foster harmony among different groups of people. No Place for Hate empowers schools to promote respect for individual and group differences while challenging prejudice and bigotry.
