Since 1987, the Coordinated School Health approach has been the blueprint for promoting healthy practices in a school setting. CSH programs have helped to establish policies and practices in states, districts and schools throughout the nation.
The Austin ISD Health Education curriculum consists of high-quality instruction and activities that are aligned to state and national standards. The Health Education Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills are divided into four strands. The strands address knowledge and skills needed to understand health behaviors, health information, influencing factors and personal/interpersonal skills.

All 3rd through 12th grade students enrolled in a PE or a PE substitution are required to take the Fitnessgram assessment. The assessment includes a variety of health-related physical fitness tests that assess aerobic capacity, muscular strength and body composition. Scores from these assessments are compared to Healthy Fitness Zone standards to determine students' overall physical fitness and suggest areas for improvement. Parents can request a copy of their student's Fitnessgram report from their physical education teacher or view it on the AISD Parent Cloud.
