Austin High Video Highlights Successful MAPS Course

Methods for Academic and Personal Success is an AISD program/course designed to help freshmen during their transition to high school. MAPS first begin when the Austin High School Freshman Initiative Committee sought to enhance opportunities for incoming freshman. A teacher wrote the curriculum the first year based off Performance Psychology components. During the second year of MAPS implementation, Austin High was able to partner with the Department of Social and Emotional Learning and add School Connect activities to enrich the curriculum.

Blazier Elementary's Successful Virtual Book Drive

Blazier Elementary School and Education Austin worked together with First Book to coordinate a Virtual Book Drive to promote literacy. The teachers and administrators at Blazier worked tirelessly to raise more than $1,900 so their 900 students can receive the book "What To Do With a Rebozo?" by Carmen Tafolla. Dr. Tafolla, author of more than 20 books and newly named by San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro as the first Poet Laureate of the City of San Antonio, visited the school on Feb. 20, 2014. 

Media Advisory: AISD Invites Families to 8th Annual Feria Para Aprender

AUSTIN, Texas—The Austin Independent School District invites students and their families to learn about the numerous resources available to them at Feria Para Aprender, the largest Spanish-language education fair in Central Texas.

What: The eighth annual Feria Para Aprender, which is free and open to the public, will include a mariachi group and jazz band alongside resources for families.

Austin Animal Center visits Health Science Students at Eastside

Kimberly Hart, the Outreach and Education Program Manager for the Austin Animal Center recently visited students enrolled in the Principles of Health Science courses at Eastside Memorial High School. Hart provided students with information about preparation to work in public health and community health, while also explaining the services and resources provided by the Austin Animal Center. Many students who owned pets explained to Hart they had used some of the services, but were unaware of the many alternative support systems being offered by the Austin Animal Center.
