2016 is Off to a Green Start at AISD
Last month, 85 Austin ISD students, staff, parents and community members kicked off the first conversation of many for the district’s inaugural sustainability plan.The plan will provide a roadmap for achieving a shared vision for what it means to be an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable school district in the following core areas:
Bedichek Junior Marines Win National Championship
Hard work and a drive for excellence earned the Bedichek Junior Marines (right) three titles at the National Middle School Drill Championships in Dallas.Students received awards in: Armed Drill Team Exhibition, Unarmed Color Guard Performance and Unarmed Color Guard Overall. This was the first time the Bedichek Junior Marines have competed in this National Competition.

Need to Know: Aug. 6 Meeting Today, the Austin ISD Board of Trustees will discuss the possibility of revising the first day of school on the current board approved calendar to Sept. 8, 2020. The proposed calendar change would be followed by four weeks of remote learning and an additional four weeks to phase in on-campus learning.

Sadler Means Young Women’s Leadership Academy Wins Lab Makeover Grant
Bertha Sadler Means Young Women’s Leadership Academy was one of five schools in the nation to receive a grant of up to $100,000 as a finalist in the Northrop Grumman Foundation’s Fab School Labs contest.Aimed at promoting science, technology, engineering and math education, the school lab makeover contest provides public middle schools with an opportunity to create a state-of-the-art science lab.

Parenting with Love and Logic Mini Workshop
The Austin Independent School District’s Parent Support Office will be offering a free one-night workshop focused on “Parenting with Love and Logic" Saturday, Feb. 25 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Allan Elementary School, 4900 Gonzales. The event will provide parents with simple and practical techniques to effectively handle challenging child behaviors. The workshop is offered in English and Spanish.
