Black History Month profile: Barbara Jordan (en español)

This is the first in a month-long profile series spotlighting Black leaders and pathbreakers for whom Austin ISD schools are named.

By Paul Stinson

As Austin ISD begins its celebration of Black History Month, we profile Barbara Jordan: civil rights leader, constitutional champion and pathbreaker in the Texas Legislature and U.S. Congress.

Texas pioneer:  Born in Houston in 1936, Jordan was the first Black person to serve in the Texas State Senate since Reconstruction when she took office in 1967.

Hill Elementary moves to Padrón Elementary for Feb. 6 (en español)

Because the power is still not restored at Hill Elementary School, students and staff will be hosted by the Padrón Elementary community at their campus for a modified version of school.

Students will still receive breakfast and a hot lunch, they can ride their regular bus to get to Padrón, and they’ll be with their teachers and classmates.

As much as possible based on staffing, students will have essentials like art, music and P.E., as well as recess and time outdoors.
