Austin ISD to supply Narcan to schools as part of fentanyl response plan

By Paul Stinson

Austin ISD school nurses are getting opioid overdose treatment Narcan as part of a fentanyl prevention and emergency response plan that includes a partnership with local AISD police, emergency management and local health authorities.

Why it matters: These steps, part of “Fake & Fatal” awareness campaign, comes in response to fentanyl overdoses in neighboring school districts and rising national numbers of fentanyl-related fatalities.

Student enthusiasm comes from linguistic, cultural inclusion (en español)

The hallways of Perez Elementary are filled with pythons. And they hablan español. The serpentine school mascot offering encouragement, instruction and even prompts for self-reflection to students on posters is everywhere, as are the reminders of the drive to celebrate the language that is home for the many students who trace their roots to Mexico and Central America.

Austin ISD becomes first Texas district to get two AAA bond ratings

On Oct. 14, Austin Independent School District received a AAA bond rating by the bond rating agency KBRA, making the central Texas ISD the first in Texas to receive two AAA ratings. Previously, Moody’s had given Austin ISD a AAA rating.

A AAA rating, the highest a school district can achieve, indicates the lowest risk of default and ensures that the district will get the lowest interest rates when taking on debt, saving taxpayers money.
