Why it matters: Widén has an 85% Hispanic population, and Faz-Banda knows the importance of Hispanic representation in Austin ISD. His passion is to inspire new generations to excel and appreciate the advantage of speaking both English and Spanish.

• Principal Faz-Banda's priority is to build relationships with the community and the families of his students so that they trust his leadership and that of each teacher, as well as to give them the opportunity to be part of their school.

We want to congratulate Vidha Addala, a junior from Liberal Arts and Science Academy for being one of the few Texas students selected to be part of the ⚕️ Global Health Leaders Conference at Johns Hopksins University. 

Why it matters: Emerging global health leaders from grades 9 to 12 get to learn from the best leaders in health and medicine. 🩺

📱 During this conference, Addala presented her app COVID ML, which she has been developing for the past few years.

• It’s an artificial intelligence-based app for efficient diagnoses of covid-19 and other lung related illnesses bases on chest x-ray.

What they are saying: “We sincerely thank Liberal Arts and Science Academy and your community for nurturing future leaders in global health and medicine - Vibha wonderfully represented Liberal Arts and Science Academy and Texas in our program,” said Siam Rezwan, Chair of the Global Health Leaders Conference.

🥁 The LBJ ECHS Marching Jaguars opened up last month’s Jamboree 🎺 with a selection of Tchaikovsky from their repertoire, despite losing their first week of band camp to Covid.

• The band is having to start from scratch following the departure of sister school Liberal Arts and Science Academy from its shared LBJ home into a news campus in 2021.

Why it matters: the newly constituted LBJ Band offers a chance to reflect the community it represents, including the embrace of the music and show-style vibrancy 🎉 on display by Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or HBCUs.

What they’re saying: “My idea is let’s celebrate all of the cultures that make up this school,” said LBJ Director of Bands Byron Goble. “We have over 30 percent African American students at this school—one of the largest concentrations in the district—and a very large population of Hispanic students.”

• 🥁 LBJ’s Head Drum Major Rayna Joiner said she was inspired to join the band after feeling the joy emanating from the risers during the school’s first-ever football 🏈 state championship game.

“I heard the songs they were playing in the stands and it sounded really fetchy, funky … it was good to hear and see,” she said. “The HBCU runs in the blood and it feels good.”

Austin ISD fourth-grade bilingual teacher Luz Luz Álvarez-Sims is one of 15 recipients of a 2022 Humanities Texas Outstanding Teaching Award.

• Álvarez-Sims, who has taught bilingual fourth-grade for the past seven years at Travis Heights Elementary received the Linden Heck Howell Outstanding Teaching of Texas History Award during a monthly assembly earlier this month.

What they’re saying: “Through my 13 years as an educator, I have found that students learn when their identity is valued, when they can see the impact of their learning beyond the classroom, and when they are invited to ask questions and think critically about topics,” said Álvarez-Sims.

Why it matters: The award recognizes exemplary contributions in teaching, curriculum development and extracurricular programming.

By the numbers: Álvarez-Sims earned the distinction after being chosen out of a pool of 600 teachers nominated by their peers.

• She will receive a $5,000 cash award and an additional $1,000 for her school to purchase instructional materials.

For parents of elementary students that are using Austin ISD-provided iPads, starting October Friday, October 14, they will not have any access to YouTube content on their device.

Why it matters: This measure is to help increase security and minimize any distraction.

• So, all students from PreK to 5th grade will only be able to access YouTube content in their Austin ISD Chromebooks when videos are provided to them through embedding, which teachers will take care of.

Students in 6th grade and above will not be affected.

🥁 Los Jaguars marchantes de la Preparatoria LBJ abrieron el festival del mes pasado🎺 con una selección de Tchaikovsky de su repertorio, a pesar de haber perdido su primera semana del campamento de la banda a causa del COVID. 

• La banda está teniendo que empezar desde cero tras la partida de su escuela hermana, la Academia de Ciencias y Humanidades, de su hogar compartido con LBJ a un nuevo plantel en 2021. 

Por qué es importante: La recientemente formada banda de LBJ ofrece la oportunidad de reflejar a la comunidad que representa, incluyendo la acogida de la música y la vitalidad estilo espectáculo 🎉 característica de las instituciones de educación superior y universidades históricamente Afroamericanas o HBCU, por sus siglas en inglés.

A trio of Odom Elementary school students named Maria, Lia, & Cesar from Ms. Flores’ 2nd Grade class joined forces to win first place in the AISD Energy Heroes Challenge.

 The contest run by Austin ISD’s sustainability program celebrating the 7th annual nationwide Energy Efficiency Day asked participants for original drawings to create effective and inspiring awareness toward energy conservation. Utility bills rank second after salaries in terms of operating costs for school districts.

The first-place finish (pictured) earned the Odom Elementary classroom a petting zoo visit by Tiny Tails to You, offering a one-hour educational bundle of animal experiences including time with a bunny, hedgehog and a tortoise.

 Eastside ECHS 11th Grade student Ivana from Ms. Cardena’s art class took second-place, while Overton Elementary 4th Grade student Anna from Ms. Cova’s classroom took third.

 All finalists will get recognition for their submission and a small present from the AISD Energy & Water Management Department. The prizes will be awarded in the upcoming days, following agreement with the winners’ teachers.

Un trío de estudiantes de la Escuela Primaria Odom llamados María, Lia y César de la clase de segundo grado de la maestra Ms. Flores unieron sus fuerzas para ganar el primer lugar en el desafío Héroes de Energía de AISD.

🌎 El concurso organizado por el programa de sustentabilidad de Austin ISD que celebra el 7º Día anual de la 💡 Eficiencia Energética a nivel nacional solicitó a los participantes dibujos originales para crear conciencia efectiva e inspiradora sobre la conservación de la energía. Las facturas de servicios públicos ocupan el segundo lugar después de los salarios en términos de costos operativos para los distritos escolares.

Gracias al el primer lugar (en la foto) el salón de clases de la escuela primaria Odom gano una visita al zoológico de mascotas de Tiny Tails to You, que ofrece un paquete educativo de experiencias con animales de una hora que incluye tiempo con un conejito, un erizo y una tortuga.

La estudiante de 11.° grado de Eastside ECHS, Ivana, de la clase de arte de la maestra Ms. Cardena, obtuvo el segundo lugar, mientras que la estudiante de 4.° grado de la Escuela Primaria Overton, Anna, del salón de clases de la maestra Ms. Cova, obtuvo el tercer lugar.

Todos los finalistas recibirán reconocimiento por su presentación y un pequeño regalo del Departamento de Administración de Energía y Agua de AISD. Los premios se entregarán en los próximos días, previo acuerdo con los profesores de los ganadores.

🎉We are still celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, and there's no better time to highlight 🏫 Widén Elementary School Principal Benito Faz-Banda's work to promote bilingualism.

Why it matters: Widén has an 85% Hispanic population, and Faz-Banda knows the importance of Hispanic representation in Austin ISD. His passion is to inspire new generations to excel and appreciate the advantage of speaking both English and Spanish.

• Principal Faz-Banda's priority is to build relationships with the community and the families of his students so that they trust his leadership and that of each teacher, as well as to give them the opportunity to be part of their school.

What they're saying: "I have always been very proud of my culture, of my homeland, of my identity; to this day they call me Mr. Faz-Banda, because I take into account the last names of my dad and my mom, all of that has to do with my perspective as a leader."

We want to congratulate Vidha Addala, a junior from Liberal Arts and Science Academy for being one of the few Texas students selected to be part of the ⚕️ Global Health Leaders Conference at Johns Hopksins University. 

Why it matters: Emerging global health leaders from grades 9 to 12 get to learn from the best leaders in health and medicine. 🩺

📱 During this conference, Addala presented her app COVID ML, which she has been developing for the past few years.

• It’s an artificial intelligence-based app for efficient diagnoses of covid-19 and other lung related illnesses bases on chest x-ray.

What they are saying: “We sincerely thank Liberal Arts and Science Academy and your community for nurturing future leaders in global health and medicine - Vibha wonderfully represented Liberal Arts and Science Academy and Texas in our program,” said Siam Rezwan, Chair of the Global Health Leaders Conference.

🥁 The LBJ ECHS Marching Jaguars opened up last month’s Jamboree 🎺 with a selection of Tchaikovsky from their repertoire, despite losing their first week of band camp to Covid.

• The band is having to start from scratch following the departure of sister school Liberal Arts and Science Academy from its shared LBJ home into a news campus in 2021.

Why it matters: the newly constituted LBJ Band offers a chance to reflect the community it represents, including the embrace of the music and show-style vibrancy 🎉 on display by Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or HBCUs.

What they’re saying: “My idea is let’s celebrate all of the cultures that make up this school,” said LBJ Director of Bands Byron Goble. “We have over 30 percent African American students at this school—one of the largest concentrations in the district—and a very large population of Hispanic students.”

• 🥁 LBJ’s Head Drum Major Rayna Joiner said she was inspired to join the band after feeling the joy emanating from the risers during the school’s first-ever football 🏈 state championship game.

“I heard the songs they were playing in the stands and it sounded really fetchy, funky … it was good to hear and see,” she said. “The HBCU runs in the blood and it feels good.”

Austin ISD fourth-grade bilingual teacher Luz Luz Álvarez-Sims is one of 15 recipients of a 2022 Humanities Texas Outstanding Teaching Award.

• Álvarez-Sims, who has taught bilingual fourth-grade for the past seven years at Travis Heights Elementary received the Linden Heck Howell Outstanding Teaching of Texas History Award during a monthly assembly earlier this month.

What they’re saying: “Through my 13 years as an educator, I have found that students learn when their identity is valued, when they can see the impact of their learning beyond the classroom, and when they are invited to ask questions and think critically about topics,” said Álvarez-Sims.

Why it matters: The award recognizes exemplary contributions in teaching, curriculum development and extracurricular programming.

By the numbers: Álvarez-Sims earned the distinction after being chosen out of a pool of 600 teachers nominated by their peers.

• She will receive a $5,000 cash award and an additional $1,000 for her school to purchase instructional materials.

For parents of elementary students that are using Austin ISD-provided iPads, starting October Friday, October 14, they will not have any access to YouTube content on their device.

Why it matters: This measure is to help increase security and minimize any distraction.

• So, all students from PreK to 5th grade will only be able to access YouTube content in their Austin ISD Chromebooks when videos are provided to them through embedding, which teachers will take care of.

Students in 6th grade and above will not be affected.

🥁 Los Jaguars marchantes de la Preparatoria LBJ abrieron el festival del mes pasado🎺 con una selección de Tchaikovsky de su repertorio, a pesar de haber perdido su primera semana del campamento de la banda a causa del COVID. 

• La banda está teniendo que empezar desde cero tras la partida de su escuela hermana, la Academia de Ciencias y Humanidades, de su hogar compartido con LBJ a un nuevo plantel en 2021. 

Por qué es importante: La recientemente formada banda de LBJ ofrece la oportunidad de reflejar a la comunidad que representa, incluyendo la acogida de la música y la vitalidad estilo espectáculo 🎉 característica de las instituciones de educación superior y universidades históricamente Afroamericanas o HBCU, por sus siglas en inglés.

The Board of Trustees approved a tax rate of $0.9966 per $100 of property value for the 2022-23 school year.

• The new tax rate is six and a half cents lower than last year’s and the lowest tax rate of any Central Texas school district.

Why it matters: Property values are continuing to increase in Austin, so lowering our tax rate is one of the most impactful ways the district can offset the rising cost of living for our community.

What's next: Next year, the Board is expected to lower the tax rate for 2023-24 by an additional three cents to $0.9666 per $100 of taxable value.

The Board of Trustees approved new protections for construction workers on future Austin ISD projects ahead of the 2022 Bond, which would create projects on nearly every campus if passed.

Why it matters: Workers on new projects will now be guaranteed living wages, safety training, worker’s compensation and healthcare coverage, paid sick leave and independent third-party monitoring.

• The new policy would also give local workers hiring preference where possible.

What’s next: The new labor standards will take effect for any new project that will be funded by the bond propositions which will appear on the Nov. 8 election ballot.

The Board of Trustees voted to approve Election Day as a holiday on the 2022–23 and 2023–24 academic calendars at its Sept. 29 meeting.

• Nov. 8, 2022, and Nov. 7, 2023 will now be a holiday for all students and a professional development day for all staff.

Why it matters: Making this day a holiday would ensure that more of our staff and students of voting age would be able to get to the polls and make their voices heard.

What's next: Early voting is Oct. 24 – Nov. 4. Find your nearest polling place ahead of Election Day.

La mesa directiva aprueba una tasa tributaria de $0.9966 por $100 del valor de la propiedad para el año escolar 2022-23.

• La nueva tasa tributaria es seis centavos y medio más baja que la del año pasado y es la tasa tributaria más baja de cualquier distrito escolar del Centro de Texas.

Por qué es importante: Los valores de la propiedad no han dejado de aumentar en Austin, por lo tanto bajar nuestra tasa tributaria es una de las maneras más impactantes en las que el distrito puede compensar el creciente costo de la vida para nuestra comunidad.

Qué es lo siguiente: El próximo año, se espera que la mesa directiva baje la tasa tributaria para 2023-24 en unos tres centavos más a $0.9666 por $100 del valor imponible.

La mesa directiva aprueba nuevas protecciones para los trabajadores de la construcción para los proyectos futuros del Austin ISD antes del Bono 2022 el cual crearía proyectos en casi todos los planteles si es aprobado.

Por qué es importante: Ahora se les garantizará a los trabajadores de los nuevos proyectos salarios dignos, capacitación de seguridad, compensación del trabajador y cobertura médica, licencia por enfermedad paga y supervisión a cargo de terceros independientes.

• La nueva política también les daría a los trabajadores locales preferencia en la contratación en donde sea posible.

Qué es lo siguiente: Las nuevas normas laborales entrarán en vigor en todos los proyectos nuevos que serán financiados por las propuestas del bono el cual aparecerá en la boleta de la elección del 8 de noviembre.

La mesa directiva votó en favor de la aprobación de que el Día de elección sea feriado en los calendario académicos del 2022–23 y 2023–24 en su junta del 29 de septiembre.

• El 8 de noviembre de 2022 y el 7 de noviembre de 2023 ahora será feriado para todos los estudiantes y un día para el desarrollo profesional para todo el personal.

Por qué es importante: Convertir este día  en feriado aseguraría que más de nuestro personal y estudiantes en edad de votar pudieran llegar a la votación y hacer escuchar sus voces

Qué es lo siguiente: La votación anticipada es del 24 de octubre al 4 de noviembre. Encuentre su lugar de votación más cercano antes del Día de elección.
