Open for Learning Plan Version 4 / Plan Abierto para el aprendizaje: Versión 4

Dear Austin ISD,

I have been so impressed by the creativity, resilience and flexibility I’ve witnessed in our remote classrooms over the past few weeks. As we celebrate a successful virtual launch of this new school year, we are also preparing for the next four weeks of school when we will begin to welcome students on campus in a phased-in approach.

Thanks to the collaborative effort among students, staff, families and our community, I am confident we are well-prepared for the next stage in our reopening process.

PTA Grant Helps Summitt Elementary Carry On Tradition

We are #AISDProud of Summitt Elementary PTA who was awarded a $5,000 grant to help carry on a unique tradition for their school and community when the COVID-19 pandemic threatened to shut it down.

The grant money will help the Summitt community continue celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival. For this year’s festival, each student will receive a lantern kit and Vietnamese gift bag to participate at home. Students will be encouraged to light their LED-powered paper lanterns and record their experience for a video.

“Proud to be Hispanic” Virtual Talent Show / Espectáculo virtual de talento "Orgulloso de ser hispano"

Every year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, Austin ISD joins the rest of the country to observe National Hispanic Heritage Month—a celebration of the diverse cultures and riveting histories of the people in this country with ancestral roots in Spain, Mexico, and Central and South America.

This year, we are celebrating with our students through a virtual talent show. AISD students can showcase their talents by submitting photos or videos of how they celebrate their Hispanic culture at home. The categories include:

Brooke Art Transition Task Force Meeting | Reunión del Equipo Especial de la Transición del Arte Brooke

Protecting and honoring the beautiful murals and artwork at Brooke Elementary School, many of which were created by east Austin artists, is a priority for the district. The artwork is an expression of the community, and the district is committed to working closely with community members to identify a location for the pieces to be displayed for future generations to enjoy.

AISD Awarded District of Distinction from Texas Art Education Association

We are #AISDProud this week as AISD has been awarded a District of Distinction award from the Texas Art Education Association for the second year in a row.

This annual award goes to school districts that lead the way in visual arts. The school districts are recognized for promoting the arts and their outstanding leadership towards teaching.

To qualify, each district submits their best artwork, which must meet 12 out of the 14 criteria to be able to receive the award.
