Meetings

The following are the Head Start Policy Council regular meeting dates for the 2023-24 school year. HSPC meetings are normally scheduled on Tuesday mornings from 8am to 10am.  Meetings will be held in-person at AISD Central Office, located at 4000 IH 35 Frontage, Austin TX 78704 with Zoom participation as needed. Regular meetings are not held in June, July, or December unless needed. Spanish translations are provided both orally and in written communications, as needed.

Head Start Policy Council

The Head Start Pre-K3 Policy Council is a parent and community lead advisory board that provides guidance to the AISD Head Start Pre-K3 programs regarding:

  • Parent involvement and activities
  • Head Start program recruitment, selection, and enrollment priorities.
  • Budget planning for program expenditures, including policies for reimbursement and participation in policy council activities.
  • Bylaws for the operation of the policy council.
  • Procedures for how members of the policy council of the Head Start agency will be elected.

More information regarding the policy council roles and responsibilities can be found in Section 642 (c)(2)(D) of the Head Start Act and in the Head Start Performance Standards.

The Austin ISD Head Start Policy Council is made up of parent representative(s) (parents/guardians of a child enrolled in Austin ISD Head Start) from each school that houses an AISD Head Start program as well 3-5 community members at any time. At this time, there are no vacant parent or community member positions on the Austin ISD Head Start Policy Council. 

Superintendent, Trustees Join Travis ECHS Culinary Students in Annual Tamalada

Austin ISD students, staff, parents and community members will participate at Travis Early College High School's annual Tamalada, or tamale-making party. 

Superintendent Paul Cruz and members of the district's Board of Trustees will join Travis culinary students in the campus' Tamalada event, which aims to share the Latino culture of making tamales each holiday season.

Students will be in the midst of preparing and assembling a variety of tamales to share with the community. Cruz and trustees will work hands-on with students during the Tamalada.

From its beginnings in 1980, the PALS mentoring program has been supporting students and building community leaders. Early on, it became clear that the program’s success would reach well beyond the classroom. Not just for the high school years, but for the decades beyond. 

Make a Great Choice: AISD Hosts Annual Middle School Fair

Austin ISD welcomes families of current and future middle school students to the annual Middle School Fair on Dec. 7.

Students and families can learn about the diverse and innovative programming offered in AISD, enjoy student performances, and hear about programs and classes open to students at the district's 19 middle schools.

Free transportation is provided for families on a rotating basis beginning at 8 a.m. on December 7th at Northeast ECHS and Travis ECHS.

U.S Army "Blackhawk" Helicopter visits James Bowie High School

James Bowie High School students and faculty will have the unique opportunity to see a U.S. Army UH-60 "Blackhawk" helicopter land and take off from the athletic fields at 9 a.m. on Dec. 2.

The event was coordinated between the district and school officials, Bowie's Air Force Junior ROTC program and the Texas Army National Guard. Some classes will have the chance to tour the helicopter and talk with the aircrew and other aviation professionals.  Students will also learn about the STEM aspects of careers in aviation and emergency rescue.
