AISD Proud: 2019 Teachers of the Year Surprised by Superintendent

Superintendent Paul Cruz surprised four teachers in their classrooms today to announce their selection as Austin ISD's 2019 Teachers of the Year for elementary and secondary schools.

Being selected as a Teacher of the Year is one of the highest honors the district bestows on AISD teachers.

"At Austin ISD it so important to recognize our teachers for the great work they do," Superintendent Paul Cruz said. "It's hard work, but heart work preparing our students for college, career and life."

Health Summit and Fair

Hispanic Austin Leadership and Austin ISD are proud to present a community health summit focused on mental wellness and health. Students and families will learn about the mental health resources available to them in AISD and Travis County.

Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of mental health issues, as well as interact with mental health professionals. The event will feature keynote speakers, vendors, prizes and food. Breakfast and registration will start at 9 a.m.

Austin ISD Teachers Named Finalists for 2019 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards

Eight Central Texas area educators have been named finalists for the 2019 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, spotlighting them as some of the best educators in Texas.

Six teachers were presented with a $1,000 check for themselves and a $1,000 check for their schools. The two Austin ISD finalists are:

* David Walker, Liberal Arts and Science Academy High School, Austin ISD (Rising Star Secondary). Walker has been with AISD for 10 years and teaches Organic Chemistry and Geo Biology/Planet Earth.

Crockett Early College High School Golden Gala

Calling all former students and staff from Crockett Early College High School. The Crockett ECHS Golden Gala will be held at Palmer Auditorium Saturday, April 13 from 5–10 p.m. Advertisements can be purchased for placement in the keepsake program. Commemorative 50th Anniversary T-shirts are also available for purchase.

United Way and Austin ISD Partner to Expand High-Quality Pre-K Options for Families

United Way for Greater Austin and the Austin Independent School District are expanding an established collaboration to increase access to high-quality Pre-Kindergarten.

Austin ISD trustees approved an innovative solution that will serve as a model in the state for how communities can make high-quality early education accessible to all families.

Austin ISD Community Input Meetings for New Equity Officer

The Austin ISD is excited to announce that the district will move forward with the hiring of an equity officer.

The district will host two public meetings for families, staff and the community to address the creation of a candidate profile for the equity officer and to get feedback on the position.

The goal is to hire a person by the end of June 2019.  

The community will be asked about the ideal characteristics and qualities for an equity officer to succeed in ensuring equitable opportunities for all students through the following guiding categories:

Austin ISD Celebrates first César Chávez-Dolores Huerta Day

The Austin Independent School District celebrates the first-ever celebration in honor of César Chávez and Dolores Huerta on Friday, March 29.

On this day, the district will honor the lives and legacies of the two Hispanic civil rights leaders who formed the United Farm Workers Union in the 1960s to protest the poor treatment of laborers.

Schools will have opportunities to engage students and staff in the celebration, including lessons focusing on both Chávez and Huerta and messages shared on morning announcements and social media.

AISD Board of Trustees Approve Williams Elementary School Principal Appointment

The Austin ISD Board of Trustees has appointed Natalie Cardona-Villanueva to serve as principal of Williams Elementary School. The board approved the decision at its March 25 regular board meeting. 

Cardona-Villanueva most recently served as interim principal of Williams since December 2018. She previously worked as administrative supervisor in the elementary associate superintendent office and as an assistant principal at Langford Elementary School. She has been with AISD since 1998 and served as a teacher for 15 years.
