Legislative Updates for Special Education

Join Austin ISD in collaboration with the Intellectual Developmental Disabilities Alliance of Central Texas for a legislative update. Six community nonprofits will be in attendance to answer questions about their child-centered, family-focused services from 5:30 to 6 p.m. The session starts at 6 p.m.

Austin ISD Joins Verizon Innovative Learning Program to Bring 24/7 Internet Access, Tablets and Technology Coaches to Local Middle Schools

Austin ISD has joined Digital Promise and Verizon Innovative Learning, the education initiative of the Verizon Foundation, to equip every student and teacher at five AISD middle schools with a device and up to a four-year data plan.

At the start of the 2019 school year, Burnet, Martin and Paredes middle schools, Garcia YMLA and Sadler Means YWLA will be among the 50 new schools joining the nationwide initiative, bringing the program to 150 middle schools.

Budget Briefs: AISD Conducts Employee Compensation Survey, Reviews Results

The district is entering the phase of its budget process where employee compensation packages are revisited. Two of the biggest components of this are employee salaries and health benefits. To best understand what is most valuable to employees, a staff compensation survey was distributed to all staff.

The district received over 5,500 survey responses, which represents nearly half of all staff
and teachers.

Key takeaways from the survey include:

AISD Alumni Spotlight: Sae Saito

Sae Saito said she was prepared to face challenges when she learned her family would move from her native Japan to Austin. She said she did not expect, however, for her new school – Eastside Memorial Early College High School – to give her the sense of acceptance and belonging that it did. 

“Eastside was like my home,” said Sae, who arrived in Austin in 2009 when she was 15 years old.
