Austin ISD and Marathon Kids celebrates the third year of a partnership to take youth exercise in Austin to the next level.
Through the collaboration, AISD elementary school teachers will use the Marathon Kids research-based curriculum during daily Working Out for Wellness time.
During the year, students will be encouraged to run or walk the equivalent of four marathons in 10-minute daily increments. For each marathon completed, students receive rewards from Nike.
Austin ISD’s Class of 2016 federal graduation rate for all students rose to 90.7 percent, with gains made in every student group.
“I am so #AISDProud of the gains our students and staff have made in graduation and dropout rates,” said Superintendent Paul Cruz. “This far exceeds the national rate. This is a great step in preparing all students for college, career and life, and shows our dedication to reinventing the urban school experience.”
When Austin ISD trustees called a $1.05 billion bond proposal in June, they said it would come with no tax rate increase, leaving some to wonder how that would be possible.
AISD Chief Financial Officer Nicole Conley Johnson said that is partly because the district would not borrow the funds all at once.
“We would be issuing about a billion dollars over five years,” said Conley Johnson. “Our goal is to manage the tax rate every year by using ‘just-in-time’ debt where we layer in our debt.”
Dr. Sam Rhine will speak to high school biology, pre-AP biology, AP biology, and bioengineering students from AISD and surrounding districts at the Performing Arts Center.
Dr. Rhine's topics include the latest published research in genetics and bio-engineering.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please call Barbara ten Brink at 512-414-8036
