Govalle Elementary 85th Anniversary Celebration

Govalle is celebrating 85 years of excellence, and we would love to have you join our community from 4–6 p.m. on May 19 to honor this milestone.

Our celebration will be the capstone to a wonderful week of alumni reading to students, garden planting and a parade. Trustee Mathias will be speak and we will have performances by several Govalle groups, including the ACE Ballet, ACE Ballet Folklorico and Hip Hop Dance.

We'll have family boards displaying generations of Govalle families, a memory wall, roadrunner crafts, a selfie booth with our Roadie mascot, a listening booth and more. We will cap off the event with anniversary cake and Las Mananitas and Happy Birthday performed by the Govalle choir and Linder's Mariachi. 

Burnet Middle School Eighth-graders Named Writing Program Ambassadors

Two Burnet Middle School eighth-graders have been named national ambassadors for the Do the Write Thing Challenge.

This year marks the first time that the two national ambassadors from the Austin-Travis County are from the same school.

Rudolph (R.C.) Hardin and Vivian Pan were selected as ambassadors for the program, which is an initiative of the National Campaign to Stop Violence.

Annual Title I Meetings for Families, Community Members

Austin ISD and the State, Federal and Private Accountability Department invite families and the community to learn about Title I. 

The district hosts three open meetings May 23: 8–9 a.m., noon–1 p.m. and 5:30–6:30 p.m.

All meetings are at the AISD Performing Arts Center Black Box Theater, 1500 Barbara Jordan Blvd.

Community to Hear from District 6 Candidates at Two Forums

The Austin ISD Board of Trustees voted to appoint a trustee to fill the District 6 vacancy created by the recent resignation of Trustee Paul Saldaňa. The board accepted applications from people interested in being appointed to represent District 6, and is expected to fill the vacancy June 12. 

Three candidates have filed to be considered for appointment to the vacant District 6 seat on the AISD Board of Trustees: Alejandro Delgado, Geronimo Rodriguez and Glen Shield. 

MEDIA ADVISORY AISD to break ground on Career Launch addition at LBJ Early College High School

Austin ISD will break ground May 13 on an approximately 5,000-square-foot building to accommodate the new Career Launch program at LBJ Early College High School.

The program, a partnership with Seton Healthcare Family and Austin Community College, allows students to earn an associate degree in health science, preparing them to further their education in the medical field.

Diversity by Design Steering Committee Meeting

The Diversity by Design Steering Committee has been formed to begin working on a plan to increase the socioeconomic diversity in District 1 schools.

This plan would include reviewing current student assignment plans, options for student transfers, the development of new campus programs, development of new choice offerings, and strengthening and marketing existing programs. A successful plan would then be studied for expansion districtwide.

The first meeting of the Diversity by Design Steering Committee is 4:30–6:30 p.m. May 18 at Barbara Jordan Elementary School.

U.S. News & World Report Ranks Five AISD High Schools Among Best in Nation

Five Austin ISD high schools are among the best in the nation, according to the 2017 U.S. News & World Report rankings.

Four of the schools were among the top-ranked public high schools on the magazine's list in 2016. Akins made the top-ranked list this year.
