AISD Librarian Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Elizabeth Polk, assistant director of library media services for Austin ISD, received the state’s top honor for library service April 20 during the Texas Library Association Annual Conference in San Antonio.

Polk was awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award before thousands of cheering colleagues.

She started her career at AISD in 1966, working as an elementary school librarian before becoming the AISD elementary library coordinator.

Reach Higher: College-bound Seniors Celebrate at #CTXSigningDay

Austin ISD seniors basked in the glow of accomplishment at Central Texas College Signing Day, a community-wide celebration that brings together 1,000 college-bound seniors from school districts throughout the region.

Inspired by the NCAA’s National Signing Day, College Signing Day reinforces the idea that excellence in the classroom should be given as much attention as excellence in athletics.

Maestro en Casa graduation Ceremony

Austin ISD will salute it's Maestro en Casa graduates at 6 p.m. on May 3 at the AISD Performing Arts Center. 

Since 2015, Austin ISD has implemented Maestro en Casa, a practical and simple English-language learning and life skills program. Basic English lessons help adult learners navigate common American situations and systems. The lessons are supplemented and enhanced with six culturally effective comic book-style workbooks, each covering a different subject. Aided by trained Parents Support Specialists in 21 schools, parents attend free classes in their schools and graduate at the end in a ceremony wearing caps and gowns. 

The AISD PAC is located at 1500 Barbara Jordan Blvd.

U.S. News & World Report Ranks Five AISD High Schools Among Best in Nation

Five Austin ISD high schools are among the best in the nation, according to the 2017 U.S. News & World Report rankings.

Four of the schools were among the top-ranked public high schools on the magazine's list in 2016. Akins made the top-ranked list this year.

After evaluating more than 22,000 public high schools throughout the country, U.S. News & World Report ranked:

AISD Board to Appoint Trustee to Fill District 6 Vacancy / Mesa directiva va a nombrar un miembro para cubrir la vacante del Distrito 6

The Austin ISD Board of Trustees voted April 24 to appoint a trustee to fill the District 6 vacancy created by the recent resignation of Trustee Paul Saldaňa. The board will accept applications from people interested in the seat, and is expected to fill the vacancy June 12.

Applicants may file 8 a.m.–5 p.m. April 27–May 8, and may do so in person, by mail or by email. 

LBJ Fire Academy Class 10 Graduation Ceremony

The ceremony is at 7 p.m. May 18 at the LBJ Early College High School theater. The guest speaker this year is the recently retired CTE Director Annette Gregory.

Following the ceremony we will have refreshments and photo opportunities. Come out to congratulate the outgoing class, welcome the new students and meet the instructors.

Austin ISD Hosts Two More Online Student Registration Extravaganzas

Austin ISD invites students and their families to two online registration events, April 29 and May 6.

Join Austin ISD staff 9 a.m.–noon at Eastside Memorial High School for these Student Registration Extravaganzas.

Register students for the 2017–18 school year, get help navigating the Parent Cloud or learn how to set up a new account.

Staff and computers will be available to assist families with registration and Parent Cloud accounts.

Numbers and Cents: AISD Holds Budget Community Conversations

Austin ISD will host a series of public meetings April 26 and 27 to inform the public on the preliminary 2017-18 budget.

The district will hold two meetings during the day with Chief Financial Officer Nicole Conley Johnson, as well as a broadcast meeting in the evening.
