Teacher Appreciation Week is May 4–8. AISD’s recognition will continue throughout the month—and includes Salute on Tuesday, May 19, at the AISD Performing Arts Center.

This is a wonderful opportunity for school communities to celebrate AISD’s more than 6,300 classroom teachers—and how they make a difference in the lives of Austin’s children.

Austin ISD Celebrates Physical Fitness and Sports Month

AISD is supporting the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition in honor of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.

During the month of May, all AISD staff are challenged to get 30 minutes of physical activity every day. Students are challenged to get 60 minutes per day.

Regular physical activity reduces risks for high blood pressure, heart disease and some types of cancer. 

Let’s Talk Money: Community Invited to Learn About AISD’s FY2016 Budget

Austin ISD is hosting community conversations with the public throughout May on the district’s proposed FY2016 preliminary budget.

Four in-person conversations will be held at campuses. Community members can also take part in a Tele-Town Hall on May 20, during which participants can listen to a budget presentation and call to submit questions.

MEDIA ADVISORY: Lanier Community Garden Celebrates One-Year Anniversary With Open House

The Lanier Future Farmers of America and the Multicultural Refugee Coalition are hosting an open house to celebrate the people and support who made one year possible in the Lanier Community Garden.

When: Tuesday, May 5

Open house from 5:30–7:30 p.m., with special remarks at 6:30 p.m.

Community Budget Conversations

Austin ISD wants your feedback about the district’s preliminary budget. Throughout the month of May, AISD will host community budget conversations to discuss strategic investment in priorities, projected shortfalls, long-range financial planning and proposed budget reductions.

Four in-person conversations will be held at campuses. Community members can also take part in a tele-townhall on May 20, during which participants can listen to a budget presentation and submit questions.

ACC and AISD Announce 2015 Vision + Voice Poetry Contest Winners

Austin Community College and Austin ISD announced the winners and honorable mentions for the 2015 Vision + Voice Poetry Contest this week. The annual contest is made possible through a collaboration between the Austin Community College Department of Arts and Humanities and the Austin ISD Office of Academics.

The Vision + Voice Poetry Contest began in 2014 to provide AISD students an opportunity to engage in creative writing. The poetry competition is for students in grades K-12. Poems in any language were accepted.

First Central Texas College Signing Day Celebrates Academic Excellence

Inspired by the NCAA’s National Signing Day, Central Texas is holding its first College Signing Day to showcase that excellence in the classroom is as important as achievement in athletics. More than 400 graduating high-school seniors will come together to “pledge” to pursue their higher education goals through attending a college or university or by earning their professional credentials or certificates.
