Austin ISD Celebrates Physical Fitness and Sports Month

AISD is supporting the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition in honor of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.

During the month of May, all AISD staff are challenged to get 30 minutes of physical activity every day. Students are challenged to get 60 minutes per day.

Regular physical activity reduces risks for high blood pressure, heart disease and some types of cancer.

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, from the U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, recommend that adults:

  • Aim for two hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. Moderate activity includes walking fast, dancing, swimming and raking leaves.
  • Use a fitness tracking app like MapMyFitness to help meet goals
  • Do muscle-strengthening activities—such as lifting weights or using exercise bands—at least two days a week.
