32nd Annual African-American Heritage Celebration

Austin ISD will honor the heritage of African-Americans and their legacies throughout the school district.

This year's theme is "A Century of Culture." The program celebrates students for their consistent academic success, highlights fourth- and seventh-grade students for their competitive essays as the winners of a districtwide essay competition, and honors community leaders and stakeholders as award winners in the areas of: Giving, Educational Leadership, Volunteer Service, Distinguished Service and others.

This year's program also will feature entertainment from Akins High School.

Gus Garcia Young Men’s Leadership Academy Wins Attendance Challenge for Central Texas

Austin ISD, in partnership with the E3 Alliance and the Get Schooled Foundation, are proud to announce Gus Garcia Young Men’s Leadership Academy has won the middle school fall attendance challenge for Central Texas. The school placed seventh in the nation.

The YMLA will celebrate with a schoolwide dance with the Bertha Sadler Means Young Women’s Leadership Academy at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23. The schools’ namesakes, Gus Garcia and Bertha Sadler Means, will kick off the event with a first dance. The school will also accept a prize of $5,000.

Lyndon B. Johnson Early College High School Wins Attendance Challenge for Central Texas

Austin ISD, in partnership with the E3 Alliance and the Get Schooled Foundation, are proud to announce Lyndon B. Johnson Early College High School has won the high school fall attendance challenge for Central Texas. The school placed 13th in the nation.

LBJ will celebrate with a school-wide pep rally and lunch on Thursday, Jan. 22, from 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.  

Houston Astros players Marwin Gonzalez, Chad Qualls and Alan Ashby will celebrate with the students. The school will also accept a prize of $5,000.

Austin ISD Board of Trustees Lowers I&S Tax Rate

Local school taxes make up a big part of a homeowner’s property tax bill. The tax bill is broken into two parts: Maintenance and Operations (M&O) covers operating costs like salaries, benefits and utility bills; Interest and Sinking (I&S) covers interest on bond debt for facilities. 

In August, AISD reduced its I&S tax rate to 0.1430 per one hundred dollars of assessed valuation for 2014 the tax year. Compared to other school districts in the region, AISD has the second lowest overall property tax rate, at $1.2220 per $100 of valuation.

Public Hearing on Annual Report at Board Meeting

The Austin ISD Board of Trustees welcomes public feedback on the district’s 2013-14 Annual Report, which includes the Texas Academic Performance Report, PEIMS Financial Standard Reports, campus performance objectives, a report of violent or criminal incidents, and information received from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The annual report is also available at online.

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 8:35 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, at the AISD Board Auditorium, 1111 W. Sixth St., Room 100. The hearing is part of the board's regular meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. The time of the hearing may change based on the length of other agenda items such as public comment. Tune in to Channel 22 or watch the webcast at www.austinisd.org.

Anderson Senior Wins Top National, State Honors in Original Oratory

Anderson High School senior Nikki Dargahi has won first place in one of the largest and most competitive high school speech and debate tournaments in the country.

Dargahi earned top honors in original oratory when the Anderson team traveled to Chicago in November to compete in the Glenbrooks tournament, beating 115 students in 13 rounds of competition.

For an original oratory, students must research a topic, then write, memorize and perform a speech intended to inspire the audience.
