Sept. 11 is First High School Late-Start Day

This Thursday, Sept. 11, will be the first late-start day of the school year for the following high schools:

Anderson HS
Austin HS
Bowie HS
Crockett HS
Eastside Memorial HS
International HS
Lanier HS
LBJ Early College HS
LASA HS
McCallum HS
Reagan Early College HS
Travis HS

During late-start days, classes begin one hour later, and students who ride the school bus will be picked up one hour later. Please check with your student's school for additional details.

Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival is an official harvest festival celebrated by Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Taiwanese and Japanese people. The Mid-Autumn Festival is the second-most important holiday tradition for the Vietnamese.

Summitt Elementary School and Austin ISD Vietnamese Dual-Language Program staff will celebrate this festival with students and their families from 6:30–8:30 p.m. Sept 19 at Summitt Elementary School, 12207 Brigadoon Lane, Austin, TX 78727.

Entry fee is a $3 donation per person. Children get free paper lanterns and treats, and food will be available for purchase for $7 per plate. Click here for details.

2,000 Austin ISD Teachers Get Creative with CLI

From Aug. 19–21, teachers, administrators and campus support specialists from the Crockett, McCallum and Travis vertical teams participated in professional development through the Creative Learning Initiative. 

Participants received a half-day of training from both Austin ISD’s Creative Learning Initiative team and arts partners from the Austin community. The training focused on how and when to use creative learning strategies.

Pride Week GSA Student Event

Hosted by the district and its Gay-Straight Alliances, the event will include a meet-and-greet with other students and professionals from the LGBT community, as well as discussions about the needs of and resources available to LGBT students.

AISD Statement on ACLU Complaint

AUSTIN, Texas—The Austin Independent School District released the following statement regarding the American Civil Liberties Union’s complaint against the district:

On Wednesday, just after 8 p.m., the district received a copy of the ACLU’s complaint, involving the Bertha Sadler Means Young Women’s Leadership Academy and the Gus Garcia Young Men’s Leadership Academy.

Austin ISD Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Austin ISD begins its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with a kickoff event featuring addresses by AISD Interim Superintendent Dr. Paul Cruz and Rosalba Ojeda, consul general of Mexico in Austin.

The event also will highlight cuisines from several Latin American countries, including Argentina, Peru, Mexico and Colombia. Blackshear Fine Arts Academy hosts the event, beginning at 9 a.m. Oct. 3 in the gym on the Blackshear campus, 1712 E. 11th St.

AISD Recognizes Pride Week Sept. 15–19

Sept. 13–21 is Austin Pride Week, a time to recognize the LGBT community. Austin ISD is dedicated to creating a safe, supportive environment for LGBT students and staff, and we are proud to recognize Pride Week by hosting two events. 

The first is a kickoff event for staff beginning at 4 p.m. Sept. 15 that includes a photography exhibit, panel discussion with LGBT experts and a statement of support from Interim Superintendent Dr. Paul Cruz. This event will take place at the AISD Board Auditorium, 1111 W. Sixth St., Building B, Room 100.
