Update from AISD Board President

On April 4, Vincent Torres, president of the AISD Board of Trustees, provided the following message to AISD employees, families and community members about the contingency plan should Superintendent Meria Carstarphen be officially selected April 14 to lead Atlanta Public Schools:

Dear AISD Community:

The Austin ISD Board of Trustees is committed to openness and transparency as we craft a contingency plan should Dr. Meria Carstarphen be formally chosen to lead Atlanta Public Schools on April 14.

AISD to Host Free City-wide Electronics Recycling Event April 26

The Austin Independent School District will host a free, city wide electronics recycling event on Saturday, April 26 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the parking lot at Austin High School at 1715 W Cesar Chavez Street.

Consumers are encouraged to bring their used electronics to the event for recycling; accepted items are listed below. The event is being coordinated by ARC, a technology partner of Austin ISD, and Fone4Schools, an organization that helps local schools raise money by converting donated electronics into funds for student programs.

AISD School Nurse of the Year, AISD School Health Assistant of the Year

Cassie Moffitt has been selected as AISD School Nurse of the Year and Victoria Valero as AISD School Health Assistant of the Year.

For the second year in a row, this honor has gone to a school health team who work together covering two busy schools, Clayton and Casey elementaries.

Moffitt and Valero—from left in photo with Casey Elementary School Principal Jean Bahney (center)—were nominated and selected by their peers because of their great teamwork, excellent communication and contributions to the AISD Student Health Services program.

Grand Opening of Lanier High School Community Garden

Lanier High School, along with its community, neighbors, and sponsors, officially unveils the new Lanier Community Garden with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, on Thursday, April 17 at 1:30 p.m. The Lanier Garden was made possible as a part of a Green Grant received through a collaboration between the Northwest Austin Rotary Club and the rotary Club Monterrey Obispado, in Mexico.

Cunningham Elementary Teacher Named as Finalist for an Austin Under 40 Award

Emily Smith, a fifth grade teacher at Cunningham Elementary School and an Austin ISD Demonstration Teacher, has been nominated as a finalist in the Youth and Education category of the Austin Under 40 Awards.

Since 1998, Austin’s Young Women’s Alliance and the Young Men’s Business League have partnered to host the Austin Under 40 Awards event. Winners will be announced at the Awards Gala on April 4 at Austin Music Hall.

Youth Art Month, SXSWedu to be Featured in Inside AISD April 3

The seventh episode of Inside AISD is scheduled to premier Thursday, April 3, at 6:30 p.m. Katiana McClellan, a junior at Lanier High School, will host the episode.      

Inside AISD airs on AISD TV Ch 22 every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 8 a.m. as well as being posted to the Channel 22 blog at aisdtv.blogspot.com.
