Austin NAACP Honors Carstarphen with DeWitty/Overton Freedom Award

AUSTIN, Texas—This weekend, the Austin chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People awarded the 2013 DeWitty/Overton Freedom Award to Austin ISD Superintendent Meria Carstarphen.

The award is based on the collective works of the honorees in the areas of civil rights and social justice. Carstarphen received the award at the 48th Annual DeWitty/Overton Freedom Fund Banquet Saturday, Dec. 14.

Our families are being helped already in many ways by our city, county, volunteers, churches and other non-profit agencies. However, we are finding that some of our families are still unsure about where to seek help and are finding themselves overwhelmed. Safety First: Learn About AISD's Award-winning Police Department

For almost three decades, AISD has maintained its own police department. The district's police department establishes a safe and secure environment for our future leaders to learn, grow, and succeed inside and outside of the classroom.

The department provides general law enforcement, security and safety services at AISD and is divided into five bureaus, including:

AISD Closed for Winter Break

The Austin Independent School District will be closed for the winter break Monday, Dec. 23, through Friday, Jan. 3.

All AISD offices and schools will be closed during this period. The district will resume regular business hours Monday, Jan. 6.
