Community leaders recognize education leader for efforts to address disparities within district
This weekend, the Austin chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People awarded the 2013 DeWitty/Overton Freedom Award to Austin ISD Superintendent Meria Carstarphen.
AUSTIN, Texas—This weekend, the Austin chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People awarded the 2013 DeWitty/Overton Freedom Award to Austin ISD Superintendent Meria Carstarphen.
The award is based on the collective works of the honorees in the areas of civil rights and social justice. Carstarphen received the award at the 48th Annual DeWitty/Overton Freedom Fund Banquet Saturday, Dec. 14.

Tomorrow, communities throughout the country will commemorate the one-year anniversary of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Earlier this week, community members in Newtown, Conn. launched an online memorial, which features a simple and poignant design: a heart created from the first names of the 26 victims.
AISD is dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of every student and staff member in the district. Families and team members should feel secure in knowing that safety is our number one priority. As most of you are aware Dove Springs experienced a flood that has affected many of our families. Our families are being helped already in many ways by our city, county, volunteers, churches and other non-profit agencies. However, we are finding that some of our families are still unsure about where to seek help and are finding themselves overwhelmed.
