AISD Recognizes Teachers during Annual Retirement Celebration

Austin ISD celebrated the years of service and hard work of more than 300 employees Thursday, May 30, during the district's annual Retiree Recognition Dinner. 

Chief Human Capital Officer Michael Houser, Superintendent Meria Carstarphen and AISD's 2011-2012 Teacher of the Year Matt Earhart spoke during the event at the Omni Austin Hotel Southpark. 

The Bailey Middle School Steel Drum Band, led by band director Bill Haehnel, provided music.

Anderson HS One Act Play Takes Home Fourth Place in State 5A Competition

Students in Anderson High School’s comedic One Act play, Moon Over Buffalo, were awarded the fourth place prize in the state UIL meet May 22 at the University of Texas at Austin's Bass Concert Hall. The students competed along with eight other 5A schools, and received a 4-4-5 ranking. Anderson's fourth place prize represents the best the school has performed in the state competition.

Bowie Student Wins 5A UIL State Championship in Poetry Interpretation

Makenna Perkal, a senior at James Bowie High School, placed first in poetry interpretation at the University Interscholastic League State Meet held on May 21-22 at the University of Texas at Austin.

A four-year member of the forensics team and theatre department, Perkal took ranks of 1-1-2 in her finals round, almost sweeping the event.

Perkal, who is captain of the forensics interpretation squad and president of Starlight Theatre Company, will be attending Webster University this fall to study acting.

Saturday: AISD and Community Partners Host Forum on Immigration

The Austin Independent School District invites families to attend a community forum on immigration where speakers will discuss immigration issues that affect the community.

The forum takes place Saturday, June 1 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Mendez Middle School, 5106 Village Square. Resource tables will be available at the forum to provide information on various community programs and immigration services.

MINDPOP Presents Gibson Guitars to Travis High School

AUSTIN, TX--Travis High School's principal and music teacher will be presented with new Gibson guitars this week for the school's music program as part of Any Given Child initiative, which is dedicated to supporting arts-rich schools and expanding creative learning opportunities for Austin school students.

Thinking Outside the Box (and Classroom); Discovery Hill Provides Outdoor Learning Opportunities for AISD

This month, Austin ISD students and teachers literally got their hands dirty when they celebrated the opening of Discovery Hill: Bugs Brains and Blooms, the district’s first demonstration schoolyard habitat.

The new outdoor habitat, adjacent to Pleasant Hill Elementary School, features a solar classroom and plants and materials native to Central Texas.  The site will be used as an AISD field trip destination to help connect students with nature.
