Reminder: News Media Access to Schools Limited During STAAR and TAKS Exams

Austin, Texas—Students in the Austin Independent School District are scheduled to take state exams, including the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness and theTexas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, during April and May.

Donate Unwanted Electronics to AISD Community Electronic Waste Recycling Drive

The Austin Independent School District will help community members dispose of used computers, printers and electronics in an environmentally friendly way, while helping to put money into its public schools. 

In honor of Earth Day, Austin ISD is teaming up with ARC and Electronic Recycling and Trading to collect, dispose of and recycle unwanted computers, laptops, monitors, cell phones and fax machines. Participating AISD schools will offer outdoor drop-off stations Saturday, April 20. ERT will also host a drop-off station in North Austin. 

Bowie HS Color Guard Wins State Championship

Students in the Bowie High School Color Guard recently took home first and second place state medals following a performance in the 2013 Texas Color Guard Circuit State Championships.

The championships, held April 6-7, are the most prestigious statewide competition for school color guards.  

“I am extremely proud of both teams for their extraordinary performances,” said Stephen Howard, associate director of bands and color guard director at Bowie. “They made the Bowie community proud.” 

Media Advisory: Legislature and Austin City Council Recognize 10th Anniversary of UT Longhorn Leaders Program

AUSTIN, TX­—The Austin Independent School District’s Kealing Middle School, the University of Texas School of Social Work, and the Greater Austin Crime Commission’s UT Longhorn Leaders Program will be honored with a state resolution and an Austin City Council proclamation, declaring Monday, April 15, as Longhorn Leaders Day.

What: Austin ISD would like to invite the community to a panel discussion and question and answer session regarding potential academic programming options for a future high school in South Austin.

A brief presentation and feedback results from previous community meetings will be shared. 

The South High School community meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 7, in the cafeteria at Travis High School. 

Child care and interpretation services will be provided.
