Amped Up: Eastside Memorial Band Rocks Out at SXSW

Imagine you’re an aspiring musician. One day you get a call, asking whether you are interested in opening for a slew of other artists performing at a community barbeque. Oh, and the barbeque takes place at one of the most famous music venues in the city. And the caller is actually a well-known, nationally syndicated TV personality. Also, you will perform before a crowd of thousands on the final day of the world-renowned South by Southwest music festival. And, the real kicker: you haven’t yet graduated high school. 

New North Central Elementary School Named for Dr. Janis Guerrero Thompson

The Austin Independent School District's Board of Trustees voted March 18 to name AISD’s new north central elementary school in honor of Dr. Janis Guerrero Thompson, a longtime educator whose work in the district included 17 years of service as a teacher and the former executive director of planning and community relations for AISD’s central office. 

LASA Senior Takes Top Prize at SXSW Film Competition

Liberal Arts and Science Academy Senior Alina Vega was named jury winner in the 2013 SXSW Film Festival’s High School Short Film showcase Tuesday, March 12.  

Vega’s movie, “The Benefactress,” is about how the seamstress in a high school theatre company struggles through the run of a show, pushing through even as her life starts to collapse around her.

Vega is a film student in LASA Teacher Vanessa Mokry's Audio Visual Production practicum class. 

Anderson HS Basketball Team Wins Big On and Off the Court

Anderson High School’s basketball team finished the season just one game short of qualifying for the 5A state finals but the team and its fans still have a lot to celebrate.

Every varsity player on the team made the All-District Academic Team and could likely make the All-State Academic Team, the highest statewide academic achievement for student-athletes.

Every varsity player on the team also had over a 90.25 grade point average (GPA) with six of the team’s 12 varsity players having a GPA over 100.

Austin, Texas—During Spring Break, the Austin Independent School District will participate in SXSW activities—from a discussion on how education fuels Austin’s tech industry at the interactive festival to a performance at Rachel Ray’s Feedback event at the music festival.

AISD Closed for Spring Break

Austin, TX—The Austin Independent School District will be closed for Spring Break, Monday, March 11, through Friday, March 15.

All AISD offices and schools will be closed during this period. The district will resume regular business hours Monday, March 18.
