Town Hall Meeting: Single-Sex Middle Schools, District 1

Date
Saturday, July 28, 2012 - 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Where
LBJ High School, 7309 Lazy Creek Drive, Austin, TX 78724

WHAT: The Austin Independent School District will host a town hall meeting to discuss single-sex schools from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, July 28 at Lyndon B. Johnson Early College High School auditorium, 7309 Lazy Creek Drive.

AISD is considering combining the attendance areas at the James E. Pearce College Preparatory Academy and Gus Garcia Middle School to facilitate the design of two, single-sex middle schools.  The design is one of the district’s preliminary, potential 2013-14 Annual Academic and Facility Recommendations.  Trustee Cheryl Bradley and AISD staff members will lead a panel discussion and question and answer session about single-sex schools at these campuses and such issues as academic performance, learning styles and student interests.

Male students would attend one campus and female students would attend the other campus.  The district would offer transfer options to parents who choose not to enroll their children in a single-sex school.

Austin Students in Grades 3-8 Perform Well on New STAAR Test

Austin, TX—Preliminary results released by the Texas Education Agency for the new State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) show Austin Independent School District students in grades three through eight met or exceeded state averages on 14 of the 17 tests administered in English.

For these tests, AISD students exceeded the state averages in math and reading at grades three, four and five for the percentage of questions answered correctly. The district averages for fourth grade writing, fifth grade science and sixth grade math also were higher than those of the state.

AISD Honors Best-Cleaned Schools

Earlier this month, Austin ISD housekeeping specialists congratulated four of the district's elementary, middle and high schools for being some of the cleanest and best-maintained facilities in the district for 2011-12.

Travis High School, Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders, Baldwin Elementary School and St. Elmo Elementary School were each recognized for their squeaky clean facilities.

Rain Garden Build at Barbara Jordan Elementary

Date
Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 6:00 am to 12:00 pm
Where
Barbara Jordan Elementary School, 6711 Johnny Morris Rd. Austin, TX 78724

What:

The City of Austin Watershed Protection Department, along with community leader Robert Martinez, welcome you to join the construction of a rain garden at Barbara Jordan Elementary school this Saturday at 6 a.m.

Rain gardens filter urban water runoff before they are able to enter our waterways and aquifers through a process that is both beautiful and environmentally friendly. The project is an excellent opportunity for children and community members alike to learn more about our waterways and how to reduce pollution as well as to contribute to the sense of ownership of our neighborhood schools. The project is fully funded by donations and in need of a few dedicated community members to help build the garden.

Food, water, drinks and all the necessary equipment and supplies are provided. All you need to bring is your energy and some work clothes. A rain garden will also be installed the following Saturday at Gus Garcia Middle School.
