Austin ISD Salutes Teaching Excellence

Austin, TX—Austin Independent School District and Austin Partners in Education will pay tribute to teaching excellence throughout the district during Salute, an annual event recognizing teachers and staff members.

AISD will announce the Austin Teacher of the Year during the event. The recipient will serve as the district's nominee for the Texas Teacher of the Year program. This year's finalists are Tracy Graham at Cowan Elementary, Alicia Brown-Forbes at Webb Middle School and Matt Earhart at Anderson High School.

Clayton Math Pentathlon Team Named 2012 National Champions

Clayton Elementary School's Math Pentathlon team has been named the 2012 National Champions. The students will be recognized tomorrow at a special school assembly. Math Pentathlon is a program of interactive problem-solving games, designed to motivate and strengthen basic math concepts and skills for students in kindergarten through 7th grade.

This is the fifth year Clayton students have participated in the program. They claimed the national title in 2008 and earned the Texas state trophy in 2009.

O. Henry Middle School Recognized as 2012 Texas Schools to Watch

Austin Independent School District's O. Henry Middle School has been recognized as a 2012 Texas School to Watch. The Texas Middle School Association recognized O. Henry for challenging students to use their minds well, being sensitive to the unique developmental challenges of early adolescence and providing every student with high-quality teachers and resources. O. Henry is one of six middle schools in Texas to receive this honor and one of 100 nationwide.

Middle School Parent Survey on Career and Technical Education

The AISD Career and Technical Education department is conducting a district-wide parent survey to gain public feedback on CTE programming and program accessibility. This is one of the potential 2013-14 Annual Academic and Facility Recommendations (AAFRs) being considered. Therefore, stakeholder insight and feedback will help the district prioritize and align programs to ensure our communities have equal access to CTE programming opportunities.

AISD Students Show Off New Talents During Afterschool Showcase

Austin, TX—Today, Austin Independent School District students showed off the new skills they learned in after-school programs during the 18th annual Afterschool Showcase. The event highlights student accomplishments and informs the community about the variety of after-school programs available to students. Student exhibits included Lego robotics, environmental science, golf lessons and creating bouncing slime.

AHS Band Joins Mumford and Sons Onstage for Second Time

Last year, Austin High was given a surprise when the folk rock band Mumford & Sons came for a visit. Filming their 'Railroad Revival Tour' documentary with fellow artists Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show, Mumford & Sons needed a few extra band members for their movie. The marching band was given the opportunity to play along with the band both in a video for the documentary and as a surprise finale for their concert that same night.

Austin ISD Hosts "Latino Academic Achievement Awards"

Austin, TX—Austin Independent School District will honor outstanding Latino students in sixth through 12th grade and community members during the Latino Academic Achievement Awards. AISD will recognize more than 120 students in such areas as Outstanding Progress in the ESL Program, Appreciation of Culture and Language, Outstanding Community Service Volunteer and Young Latino Leader. The district requested nominations from the community for the Latino Parent Volunteer, Latino Community Service recipient and Latino Excellence in Advocacy awards.
