AISD Teacher Travels to South Pole

O.Henry Middle School teacher, Michelle Brown has temporarily traded in her grade book for arctic gear -- traveling to Antarctica with the PolarTrec program. The eighth grade science teacher's travels are being documented online, allowing students, parents and fellow teachers to learn about her journey, as well as the work she is doing on two separate ecological projects.

Crockett High Students Unveil First Solar Learning Center

Crockett High School students studying solar energy along with representatives from Austin Energy and the Austin Independent School District cut the ribbon to the first of 15 interactive, outdoor Solar Learning Centers due for completion this year. Each learning center will be equipped with a fully functional solar array, seating for up to 30 students and three solar panels that can be rotated for interactive lessons on solar energy. Each center produces enough electricity to power a small, one-bedroom apartment.

Spotlight: Chinese Teacher of the Year

The Texas Foreign Language Association (TFLA) has named Ms. Kelly Long, the 2011 TFLA Chinese Teacher of the Year. Ms. Long is the Chinese teacher at Anderson High School. She is being recognized for her commitment to continually providing learning opportunities for her students both in and out of the classroom, as well as for her overall contributions to the Chinese program at AISD. 

Community Meeting Planned to Discuss Single-sex Schools- Nov. 19

A community meeting to discuss single-sex schools in Northeast Austin will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, in the cafeteria of LBJ High School at 7309 Lazy Creek Dr.

As part of the Facility Master Plan process, AISD is considering combining the attendance zones of Pearce and Garcia middle schools in Northeast Austin. Male students would attend one campus and female students would attend the other campus. Parents who did not want their children in a single-sex school would have transfer options.

East Austin Parents and Community Leaders Visit IDEA Flagship School

On Tuesday, November 8, a group of parents and community leaders from the Eastside Memorial Vertical Team traveled by bus to Donna, Texas for a site visit to IDEA College Prep (Donna), IDEA Public School's flagship campus.

Founded in 2000, the campus has grown from 75 to 1,407 students, and recently celebrated its second year in a row graduating 100% of its seniors.

Sunset Valley Celebrates 40th Anniversary on Dec. 1

Sunset Valley Elementary will be celebrating their 40th anniversary by hosting two ceremonies on Thursday, December 1, 2011. The first will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. and the second will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Both events will be held at the campus located at 3000 Jones Rd. and will include a history of the school dating back to the 1970s, when the school first began.

There will also be appearances by former principals and music performed by former students. Sunset Valley Elementary is asking that all alumni please stop by and join in on the festivities.

The parents, staff and students of the Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA) invite you to learn more about AISD’s only “exemplary” comprehensive high school. Please join the LASA community on Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. for an open house and learn why Newsweek ranks LASA as the 21st best public school in the United States.
