How the Waitlist Works
A waitlist is established during Admissions-Based Registration and General Registration when the number of applicants exceeds available seats.
If you are not initially offered a seat, you are placed on the waitlist for that specific school, program, and grade level. Your position is determined by three factors:
- The application round
- A predefined priority structure
- A random lottery number
Each campus program and grade level operates an independent waitlist. A seat opening in one program will only move the waitlist for that specific program.
Managing Your Offers & Choices
- Accepting Offers While Waiting: Families may accept an offered seat at one Austin ISD school while remaining active on a waitlist for another campus.
- Guaranteed Zoned Seats: Applicants on waitlists for all selected options should register at their home zoned school. Every resident within Austin ISD limits has a guaranteed seat at their zoned school, and enrolling will not impact waitlist standing.
- Lower-Ranked Options: Once the Round Two transfer window closes and finishes processing, applicants cannot be added to waitlists for schools ranked lower than an accepted offer. Unmet preferences at that stage require submitting a Transfer Exception request.
- Tracking Status: Real-time updates appear under the Next Steps section in the Enroll Austin ribbon or student tile. Official offer notifications are also sent via email.
