Student Protest & Walkout Protocols FAQ

Austin ISD recognizes that students may feel moved to express their voices through a walkout. The District’s priority is that all students should remain in class during instructional hours. It is important to note that, should students exercise their rights, the district's focus will remain on campus operations and instruction, and will work with partners to ensure the safety of all students. Walkouts are not sponsored or endorsed by the district or schools. 

Below are answers to common questions regarding how the district handles these situations.

Updates to our protest protocols (En español)

Dear Austin ISD Community,

In the last two weeks, we’ve seen an uptick in student-led protests against immigration policies and enforcement. We have managed past walkouts by giving students space and freedom to express themselves. However, the number of protests, combined with demonstrations moving off campus, has prompted our leaders to develop more detailed protest protocols to ensure the safety of our students and staff while maintaining our focus on on-campus instruction. 

Starting Monday, Feb. 9, we will implement the following updates to our protest protocols:

Annual Latino Academic Achievement Awards

The Annual Latino Academic Achievement Awards celebrates nominated students, community members, and Dual Language Seal of Biliteracy graduates every April.
