🍎 1 big thing: Free meals for 77 Austin schools

Austin ISD will provide free breakfast and lunch for all students at 77 schools for the 2024-25 school year via the federally funded Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program.

Why it matters: This initiative ensures that all students in the eligible schools have access to nutritious meals, supporting their academic performance and overall well-being.

The big picture: CEP allows schools in low-income areas to serve free meals to all students without any application. Schools not eligible for CEP will follow the standard meal status process.

What’s next: Families at non-CEP schools should submit meal benefit applications if they haven't received a notification. Contact Austin ISD Food Service at 512-414-0251 for assistance.

Pickle Elementary School receives major donation

The Assistance League of Austin surprised Pickle Elementary School staff Aug. 14 with a $50,000 investment to support the campus community.

Why it matters: In a time when budget crunches are being felt districtwide, community partnerships like this help lift up communities and show that public education is valued in Austin.

The details: The donation is part of Project Impact — a two-year program to support a school community with significant needs.

What they’re saying: “We want to make sure that whatever we select is going to benefit our students and it’s going to enhance the classroom environment for our teachers and it's going to make their work easier, better, and students are going to enjoy it,” said Principal Rosa Waters.

What’s next: Staff will submit their wish lists and deliveries will begin coming in Nov. 4.

District accountability ratings halted by county judge

The latest accountability ratings, originally slated to be released Aug. 15, have been blocked for the second year in a row after a Travis County judge issued a temporary restraining order in a new lawsuit against the Texas Education Agency.

Why it matters: The goal of the A-F accountability system is to communicate school performance with families easily. However, the updated calculations, updated STAAR assessment and significant shifts in campus ratings could cause more confusion as families try to understand how well their schools are doing.

Let’s go back: In October 2023, a judge in Texas temporarily blocked the release of the 2022-23 school accountability ratings after dozens of school districts sued TEA, claiming districts weren’t adequately notified about changes to the accountability system.

What’s Next: A hearing for the case is scheduled for Aug. 26 and the judge can either uphold the block or release the ratings.

Austin ISD launches mobile app for district news, events and emergency notifications

A new mobile app for Austin ISD is now available for download.

How it works: Users may stay up to date with access to events, documents, news from administrators, student stories and emergency notifications.

What they’re saying: "Being able to use the app to connect to our social media profiles really saves time and helps me connect with families in a way that works for them,” said Bridget Farr, principal of Winn Montessori School. “Our goal this year is consistent, clear communication with families, and we're hopeful the Austin ISD app is the place for that connection!"

Yes, but: If you have the old app, it is no longer supported, you’ll need to download the latest version for free either on Google Play or the Apple App store.

1 Algo importante: El AISD ofrecerá comidas gratuitas a todos los estudiantes de 77 escuelas

El Austin ISD proporcionará desayunos y almuerzos gratis a todos los estudiantes en 77 escuelas para el ciclo escolar 2024-25 financiado a través del programa federal Disposición de Elegibilidad Comunitaria (Community Eligibility Provision, CEP por sus siglas en inglés).

El juez del condado bloquea las calificaciones de responsabilidad de los distritos escolares

Se han bloqueado las clasificaciones de responsabilidad más recientes, que originalmente se tenía programado publicar el 15 de agosto, después de que un juez del condado de Travis expidiera una orden de suspensión temporal en una nueva demanda contra la Agencia de Educación de Texas (TEA, por sus siglas en inglés).

Por qué es importante: La meta del sistema de responsabilidad A-F es comunicarles el desempeño escolar a las familias fácilmente. 🎒¡Hola! ¿Como se sienten sus hijos del regreso a clases? ¿Están emocionados, nerviosos o ambas?

💛 Sé que el inicio del ciclo escolar puede traer muchas emociones a los niños y adolescentes—-en mi caso, mi hijo está muy nervioso por empezar tercero de primaria, pero no paro de recordarle que le va a ir increíble como a todos los demás estudiantes.
