Matias's Weekly
It will be another busy week in Austin ISD, and it is only a four-day week for our students. Elementary teachers are holding parent-teacher conferences this week, and Friday is dedicated to giving our teachers and families time to meet.
Austin ISD believes that our families are assets to their children’s education, and we are thankful to partner together to support our students. Our Middle and High Schools will be engaged in professional learning at their campuses, and our team will be out supporting campus leaders as they provide professional development. Here’s hoping that the weather stays nice and our students get to spend some time outside on Friday — Vitamin D and fresh air do us all good in the winter months.

Where I’ll be and who I’ll meet
Monday, February 5
I’ll start my week by meeting with the board officers (Singh, Foster and Boswell). I’ll then head to our Long-Range Planning Operational Implementation Meeting. I’ll meet with my Senior Leadership for our standing Monday meetings. I have several one-on-one meetings in the afternoon with Dr. Reach, President Singh, and Trustee Hunter. I’ll also spend some time reviewing our upcoming fiscal forecast presentation with our CFO, Eduardo Ramos.
Tuesday, February 6
I’m excited to start at the Central Texas African American Family Support Conference today. This annual conference is a great event with many exciting opportunities to learn how we can best support our African American families and students. From there, I’ll visit a campus and deliver a Golden Rave. It’s a surprise, but I will share who it is in my next weekly. After that, I’ll head back to the office to meet with Dr. Villalpando, Executive Director of Board Services & Governmental Relations. In the afternoon, I’ll meet with our Deputy Superintendent, Paty Rodriguez, followed by a 1:1 with our CTO, Oscar Rodriguez. I’ll end my day at LBJ Early College High School, where I’ll attend a FY25 Budget Conversation. I’ll then be honored to present Yeti Coolers at the LBJ v. William B. Travis ECHS basketball game. Due to the extreme heat over the past summer, Austin Ed Fund was able to purchase Yeti coolers at a discounted rate for our Austin ISD High School campuses.
Wednesday, February 7
I’ll start my day meeting with Dr. Hawley, our Chief Officer of Organizational Transformation. My team and I will then meet so I can receive an update on where we are with completed and upcoming milestones in the TEA Order. In the afternoon, I’ll meet with Christine Steenport, Chief of Operations, and then with our General Counsel, Kenneth Walker.
Today is National Girls and Women in Sports Day! Let’s give it up for our amazing girls and women in sports in Austin ISD. We have so many amazing female athletes in Austin ISD! Shout outs and high praise for the Girls Volleyball Teams at Austin High (Bi-District Champions) and McCallum (Bi-District Champions and District Champions), the Anderson Girls Water Polo Team (District Champion, Bi-District Champion, Area Champion), the Bowie Girls Cross Country Team (4th Place Team at Regional Meet and Advanced to State), Girls Basketball at Bowie (currently tied for 1st in the district) and McCallum (currently in 1st with only one loss) and the LASA Girls Swim Team (District Champions and competing in Regionals this week)!
Thursday, February 8
Today I’ll start my day by meeting with District 2 Trustee, Ofelia Zapata. I’ll then have lunch with the I-35 North Cluster Superintendents. I’ll meet with Ed Ramos, our CFO, in the afternoon and then prepare for this evening’s Board Information Meeting. On the agenda this evening, we discuss how our 3rd grade students who receive support through Special Education are progressing in reading as well as an update on the TEA Order, presented by Dr. Jacob Reach and our TEA Monitors.
Friday, February 9
There is no school for students today, and I’ll spend the day preparing for next week. We have some big projects in the works, and I’ve set aside time to understand and develop plans for moving forward. Throughout the spring, our board will meet with the community to hear your hopes and dreams for Austin ISD students. Collaboratively, we’ll develop a new scorecard and targets so that we can create an even more exciting future for the students of Austin ISD.
Over the weekend, I’ll be cheering on Patrick Mahomes. I received my undergrad degree in Civil Engineering from Texas Tech, where Patrick Mahomes went, so it's required that I root for him! 🙂

El mensaje semanal de Matias
Será otra semana ocupada en el Austin ISD, y es sólo una semana de cuatro días para nuestros estudiantes. Los maestros de primaria tienen conferencias de padres y maestros esta semana, y el viernes está dedicado a dar a nuestros maestros y familias tiempo para reunirse. El
Austin ISD considera que nuestras familias son valiosas para la educación de sus hijos, y estamos agradecidos de trabajar juntos para apoyar a nuestros estudiantes. Nuestras escuelas secundarias y preparatorias estarán dedicadas al aprendizaje profesional en sus planteles escolares, y nuestro equipo estará apoyando a los líderes de los planteles escolares en su desarrollo profesional. Esperemos que el tiempo se mantenga agradable y nuestros estudiantes puedan pasar algún tiempo al aire libre el viernes; la vitamina D y el aire fresco nos hacen bien a todos durante los meses de invierno.

Dónde estaré y con quién me reuniré
Lunes, 5 de febrero
Empezaré la semana reuniéndome con los oficiales de la mesa directiva (Singh, Foster y Boswell). Luego me dirigiré a nuestra reunión de implementación operativa de la planificación a largo plazo. Me reuniré con mi equipo de liderazgo de alto rango para nuestras juntas permanentes de los lunes. Por la tarde tengo varias reuniones individuales con el Dr. Reach, la presidenta Singh y la miembro de la mesa directiva Hunter. También pasaré algún tiempo revisando nuestra próxima presentación de pronósticos fiscales con nuestro director financiero, Eduardo Ramos.
Martes, 6 de febrero
Estoy emocionado de comenzar hoy en la Conferencia de Apoyo a las Familias Afroamericanas del Centro de Texas. Esta conferencia anual es un gran evento con muchas oportunidades interesantes para aprender cómo podemos apoyar mejor a nuestras familias y estudiantes afroamericanos. Después visitaré una escuela y entregaré un premio Golden Rave. Es una sorpresa, pero compartiré de quién se trata en mi próximo informe semanal. Después, volveré a la oficina para reunirme con la Dra. Villalpando, directora ejecutiva de Servicios de la Mesa Directiva y Relaciones Gubernamentales. Por la tarde, me reuniré con nuestra superintendente auxiliar, Paty Rodríguez, seguida de una conversación individual con nuestro director de tecnología, Óscar Rodríguez. Voy a terminar mi día en la Preparatoria LBJ, donde asistiré a una Conversación de Presupuesto para el Año Fiscal 2025. Luego tendré el honor de presentar hieleras Yeti en el partido de baloncesto de LBJ contra William B. Travis. Debido al calor extremo durante el verano pasado, Austin Ed Fund logró comprar hieleras Yeti a un precio de descuento para nuestras escuelas preparatorias del Austin ISD.
Miércoles, 7 de febrero
Empezaré el día reuniéndome con la Dra. Hawley, nuestra directora de Transformación Organizativa. Mi equipo y yo nos reuniremos después para que me pongan al día sobre la situación en que nos encontramos con los hitos completados y los que están por completarse en la Orden TEA. Por la tarde, me reuniré con Christine Steenport, jefa de Operaciones, y luego con nuestro abogado general, Kenneth Walker.
¡Hoy es el Día Nacional de las Niñas y las Mujeres en los Deportes! Un aplauso para nuestras increíbles niñas y mujeres en los deportes en el Austin ISD. ¡Tenemos tantas deportistas increíbles en el Austin ISD! Felicitaciones y elogios para los equipos femeniles de voleibol de la Preparatoria Austin (campeonas de bidistrito) y McCallum (campeonas de bidistrito y campeonas de distrito), el equipo femenil de waterpolo de Anderson (campeonas de distrito, campeonas de bidistrito, campeonas de área), el equipo femenil de campo traviesa de Bowie (cuarto lugar en la competencia regional y avanzó a la estatal), el equipo femenil de baloncesto de Bowie (actualmente empatadas en primer lugar en el distrito) y McCallum (actualmente en primer lugar con una sola derrota) y el equipo femenil de natación de LASA (campeonas de distrito y compitiendo en las regionales esta semana).
Jueves, 8 de febrero
Hoy comenzaré mi día reuniéndome con la miembro de la mesa directiva del Distrito 2, Ofelia Zapata. Luego almorzaré con los Superintendentes de la Agrupación I-35 Norte. Por la tarde me reuniré con Ed Ramos, nuestro director financiero, y luego me prepararé para la reunión informativa de la mesa directiva de esta noche. En la agenda de esta noche , discutiremos cómo nuestros estudiantes de 3.er grado que reciben apoyo a través de Educación Especial están progresando en la lectura, así como una actualización de la Orden de TEA, presentada por el Dr. Jacob Reach y nuestros Monitores de TEA.
Viernes, 9 de febrero
Hoy no hay clases para los estudiantes, y pasaré el día preparándome para la semana que viene. Tenemos algunos grandes proyectos en marcha, y he reservado tiempo para entender y desarrollar planes para seguir adelante. A lo largo de la primavera, nuestra mesa directiva se reunirá con la comunidad para escuchar sus deseos y sueños para los estudiantes del Austin ISD. En colaboración, desarrollaremos una nueva tarjeta de puntuación y objetivos para que podamos crear un futuro aún más emocionante para los estudiantes del Austin ISD.
Durante este fin de semana, estaré alentando a Patrick Mahomes. Recibí mi título universitario en Ingeniería Civil en Texas Tech, donde Patrick Mahomes estudió, ¡así que es obligatorio que lo apoye!🙂
