LBJ ECHS Band Embraces Challenges and HBCU Spirit

By Paul Stinson

It was the Monday before Jamboree at LBJ High School and neither LBJ Director of Bands Byron Goble nor the trio of drum majors gathered in his office knew how large the prowl of marching Jaguars would be on the big day.

“We have random amount of people showing up,” LBJ senior and drum major Manuel Lopez said. “It’s not always guaranteed that the person is going to come and that’s mostly due to work or personal reasons—so we kind of have to work around those.”

Songkran and Thingyan (Buddhist, Thai, and Burmese New Year)

Songkran and Thingyan is a Water festival that marks the beginning of the new year in Buddhism and marks the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year and the Burmese New Year. Songkran (April 13th-15th) and Thingyan (April 13th-16th) may have different dates. Both holidays are observed through the water festival (pouring of water on Buddha images and Buddhist Monks) to wash away the past year's misgivings and bad luck, as well as serve as a time family gatherings. Passover (first 2 nights)

Passover is an eight-day celebration of the Jewish people being freed from slavery in Egypt; it is a celebration of freedom. The first two nights are of special importance as Jewish families traditionally celebrate at home with special meals and services. Some families may observe work restrictions at the beginning and end of the eight-day span; many families will only eat certain foods. Source: Britannica, T.
