We need more time to develop an enrollment plan for the new Northeast Austin middle school

The new middle school is on track to open for the 2023–24 school year to serve 800 students. Why it matters: A new school means more opportunities for students and families. This school is steeped in complexity given the the impacts of gentrification and population growth, not to mention the complications associated with the single-gender and under-enrolled middle schools in the area. This is an opportunity to set a precedent for how we handle enrollment in a way that’s equitable and responsive to shifting demographics.

Graduation feature: Noah Hutchinson is opening doors at McCallum

By Gabriella Beker with additional reporting Kathy Swartz and Sydney Kim

Noah Hutchinson has been drawing comics and cartoons since the third grade. When he and his family moved to Austin his freshman year, he entered McCallum Fine Arts Academy to pursue his passion for art.

Once at McCallum, Hutchinson began to explore video game design and programming. He began participating in video game design competitions, including the SkillsUSA Interactive Application and Video Game Creation Competition and the Global Game Jam, the world’s largest game creation competition.

A message from Superintendent Stephanie S. Elizalde / Un mensaje de la superintendente Stephanie S. Elizalde

Dear Team Austin ISD,

As we near the end of the year, I am reflecting on all the successes we’ve achieved during what has been the hardest school year for many of us. We have stood up for what is right for our kiddos, and stayed focused on improving academics across the district.
